Similarly to a bobblehead, simply draw a model of the mech somewhere inside the cockpit. Make it a simple model if necessary. In this way, those players having trouble understanding the relationship between their legs and torso directions will have a visual reference. Also, no advantage will be gained by those using it in terms of gameplay.

You could also apply any fancy camo textures to this model if you so desire, thus solving several problems for very little runtime resources or development resources.

I believe one of the earlier MW games (2? I want to say 2..) had a motile wireframe model in place of our current damage paperdoll, that would be a good solution IMO.

I took a look at the MW3 video and yes, if PGI wanted to have new players understand what their mech was doing, this is the way to go.

have it turned on by default, toggled off the HUD by a hotkey (and have the default on/off toggled in the options menu)

Allow another hotkey to rotate the 3d view, so you can study how your mech looks from the side, how far it can turn it's torso toward the back, and so people can decide whether they want to view it from the front or the back.

BAM Done. No more research necessary.
