Like many people have stated before, the developers are using the rules from battletech to balance and design the game. Unfortunately this is not Battletech, this is MechWarrior. It is true that MechWarrior is based off of Battletech but MechWarrior is a westernized video game of Battletech which is a turn-based board game. Instead of using the rules from Battletech for critical space and hardpoints, weapon damage, weapon firing speed etc., they should look at previous mech warrior titles, especially MechWarrior 3 and 4 to get an idea of how to design the game. MW4's mech lab was extremely well done. The hardpoints system made sense and was easy to balance. It made it so that you couldn't replace a machine gun with a gause rifle just because they are both ballistic weapons and you had enough tonnage left. Overall the MechWarrior games developed by Microsoft Game Studios is were Piranha Games should be drawing their inspiration, not Battletech which is a turn based board game from the 80s.

I think that it is important to draw from the past titles, which had such a wealth of good content.

PG started digging a deep hole for themselves the second they said, "Hey let's do MechWarrior!" and another guy said, "Okay, we'll start here!" and whipped out a BattleTech Technical Readout. Since then, their method of balancing realism with fariness has failed miserably at doing so, but it has succeeded immensly at creating more problems for them to solve. It is time PG looked under the rug in which they have been stuffing all the game's problems, scooped them out onto their bedroom floor, and got serious. We need PG's mother to get involved and tell PG to clean their room and listen to the cries of the players (no, merely appeasing the Founders does not count as listening to your customers, sorry Jimbo).
