  • This issue appears as high CPU usage by the MWOClient.exe (32 bit) executable.
  • This issue occurs when launching the client, and exists even before the user logs onto their account.
  • To reproduce, launch Task manager, and then launch MechWarriorOnline.exe. Select Play. Wait for splash videos to complete. At the logon screen, note the CPU usage of MWOClient.exe. ON a dual core Intel 8400, the usage is consistently above 50%. dxdiag system info dump below.

Why would the devs choose such a garbage engine to build a game on? Its sloppy coded and excessivly demanding for a game that only gives you a small bottle to exist in.

Now these guys livilhood is based on thier ability to fix an engine that is broken at the core...that, or keeping us strung along as long as possible to fill their pockets.

Dude, you're using a core 2 duo. Of course it's going to go nuts. The chip is from 2008. It is nearly 5 years old.

Right now, I'm looking at the login screen and getting 13% cpu use.

there is no reason that a login screen should use 50% of the CPU.

Additionally, Steam's monthly shows that about half of all users are still on dual core systems. I'll admit that my PC isn't the fastest any more, but it's probably close to what most of the target audience will have.

There's no on-board graphics, just two nvidia cards. Where did you read that?

EDIT: I see that too. IDK, must be shared between the GPUs. It's not using any system memory, that's all accounted for.

For the love of god, use /spoiler

The graphics card usually has the amount of vram reserved from system ram so if you have 2gb vram it has 2gb ram it can use as overflow.

Yeah ... right.

When I'm just looking at the "Home" tab in the Client, MWOClient.exe produces ~20% CPU usage on my Q9650. I really don't see why that is. It just is a static user UI. Looking at my Webbrowser shpwing static content like this board here it has 0-1% usage. Even better - if the MWO-Client-Window is not focused, CPU-Usage actually goes up to 30%.

That part is just crappy programming and probably causes some of the performance issues we're experiencing. Maybe the Client-UI does not really close, running in background causing cpu-load while we're in-game. I don't know. There's just something funny going on.

Well, IMO the really funky part about CPU usage is another one:

When the client has focus, i.e. is the active window, I get low enough CPU usage - at the login screen it uses 5% CPU time on my i5-3570, and that's with the CPU automatically downclocked already.

Now as soon as I remove focus from the client, it gets CPU hungry like there's no tomorrow, causing the CPU to kick into full turbo boost overclocked mode and still taking 28% CPU time.

Funky stuff. I have no other game that behaves that way.

No part of the MWO UI is "static". There is not a single screen where there is not some kind of 3D modelling going on, along with their physics-based effects. Many games process physics calculations at the CPU, not the GPU, which is why there is some processing going on, no matter which part of the UI you are looking at.

I can't explain the CPU use increase when the game isn't focused though. That shouldn't be happening. That said, I don't get this issue.

And I'd be willing to put down money that says that those people that are still on duel core systems cannot run most of the newer games very well. Having to upgrade sucks, I know. It can cost a lot of time and money to do it right. Unfortunately, that's just the way things go. Can't stop progress.

On my previous duo core I was able to run all the modern games I was willing to buy and install. My problem with this game is that the graphics are not that impressive even on very high. Even battlefield 3 ran better than this including the huge battles. It is important to note that I was running jets or copters which gives a pretty good LOS of the huge map and my frame rates never dropped under 30. Something isn't right with this game and I might not have the credentials to say what, but someone somewhere is not doing his job properly.

no one is arguing weither the C2D is an aging CPU, the fact of the matter is that the C2D is still a very viable CPU(of course that decreases with time). The major complaint for us C2D users is that our very viable CPUs are struggling with a game that is not providing a commensurate level of features and details.

This game does not seem to provide the quality and level of features on any scale that would justify the level of load it is putting on our CPUs. The code seems wasteful and sloppy...its easy to say the engine requires 4 cores, but the 800lb Gorilla is why would this seemingly elementary offering of MWO ever need 4 cores?

Our frustration lies in the fact the devs wanted to service C2D owners, but then chose this horrible engine that for some reason wants 4 cores for no real good reason, with the idea of tweaking it for C2D performance. To see the inefficienies of this engine and the overall lack of progress in unloading many of the calculations to the GPU only serves to be a source of frustration for us.

Crap choice in engine for the intended customer base and planned game features. Lack luster performance tweaking. It all seems to boil down to horrible dev planning and poor committment to thier customer base(even 4 core users are suffering unneccesarily deminished performance for the product received)...very few C2D owners would be here if were'nt courted as being viable by the devs.

The game longevity would be gimped with a lesser engine, it's as simple as that. Cryengine 3 is capable of stunning effects and will still look good years from now. UE3 and CE2 already look dated. In a few years, they'll look like outright crap when compared to the modern counterparts.

This game just needs a little work to get the potential out of the engine. When it gets there, it's going to be amazing.

DX11 support/activation would help the engine part a lot. Not sure how it would affect the C2D though...

100% agree. I can't believe they used CryEngine on an online game, when Crysis had the worse online experience ever and was full of hackers because the network code in it was junk. Players could claim they killed someone without ever shooting him / being within 3KM of him and server believes this. Only a complete amateur would write code like that. Before I even became a professional software developer, I never wrote code that obviously flawed. The fact that CryEngine is a waste of money/cpu/gpu doesn't help either. No sanely priced/powered system can run CryEngine with consistent FPS. Mechwarrior 4 worked a million times better than this and I'm guessing they made their own engine from scratch. It seems mwo guys were planning to use Unreal Engine 3 before, if they stuck with that, lots more systems would have been able to play the game (thus more customers...), and it would have actually been decently stable. Also, no destructible environment, wtf!!

13% is a lot. My 8-core amd uses 13%, which means one core is getting pounded.

Anyways, I realized there's the mech graphics on one of the pages, where you go to modify the loadout and there's a 3d model there. Perhaps that could justify using CPU, though one would think it would be trivial to just suspend the rendering process when it's not visible. Then again this is CryEngine so probably nothing is trivial. It still blows my mind why people even make custom UIs in games.

Also text is cut off in a lot of the menus in the UI. This would not have happened if they just used some premade UI (GDI etc), but no games do that because it's more cool to waste lots of money and everyone's time by making the UI look fancy.

The main reason this is a problem for me is because there's no save login feature in the game so I tend to just leave it open, but my PC doesn't really like having it's CPU pounded 24/7.

MW4 ran like garbage on low end machines back when it was current. That's what a C2D is now. A low end machine.

As I said above, there is NO instance of a screen in MWO where there is not some 3D modelling that's visible, thus there is no time where you'd expect your resource use to be very low.

But it had way less bugs. Also 5 years after it was made, it ran on pretty much any current CPU/GPU. This is not the case for anything on CryEngine2 and will not be the case for CryEngine3.

I usually have this window open, which should not take over 1%:

Also lol at the dumb thumbnail opening thing on this forum. It's just as dumb as the menus in this game. I don't want to see some laggy animation that takes over a second before I can see what I want to see (the picture enlarged). Typical nonsense choosing marketing over basic functionality.

Ok, you got me on the home screen. I forgot that.

I still argue that the processing is still there. As has been said above, it's a custom UI built in the same game engine as the actual levels. There's a minimum amount of processing any engine can do in order to keep running. Perhaps that's what we're seeing.

1. Bugs are for a different conversation. I'm not convinced that what's described in the OP is a bug.
2. CE2 was released in late 2007. It is now late 2012 (almost 5 years exactly, in case you were wondering). CE2 still performs very well on a wide range of hardware, including the i7 3820 that I use at home. Now you're just looking for things to complain about.

The 3d is still running behind the home screen, having it doing that is to make the change into mechlab smoother as otherwise it'd have to load the things being rendered and fire it all up which would mean a delay going between home and mechlab tab.

I'm not going to argue with you it is silly though
