Was is always not possible to exchange MechXP to GXP after you sold a variant?

I have a bunch of MechXP sitting on a variant (DRG-1N) and can not exchange it into GXP if I sold the variant. (I got a DRG-1C now)
Exchanging xp work on another variant (AWS-8V).
