So it seems a lot of people, myself included, dislike the new 25% jam chance mechanic because it creates jams so frequently that it makes the UAC5 nearly useless. I personally dislike this whole idea of a uniform jam chance because it doesn't give me any real power to control when my weapons jam.

So I think PGI could be a lot smarter about how the jam mechanic works, and actually turn it from a completely random thing to something requiring some actual skill. Suppose that the chance for the uac5 to jam is pegged to the %heat when the shot is fired. For example, this formula:

%Jam=%heat/X

If x=2, that'd mean when you're at 98% heat, each uac5 would have a 49% chance of jamming. This creates several interesting dynamics that I think would make the game more interesting:
  • People would have to consider heat management with uac5 builds, adding an extra dimension to mech-building.
  • People would have some ability to control the jamming of their UAC5 by managing the duration of fire. They'd have to decide, given the real-time battle situation, whether or not to risk a jam by prolonged fire or to mitigate the chance of jamming by keeping their heat down.
Personally, I think this is way better than the flat 25% chance to jam they introduced today. Thoughts? Flaws? Ideas?

How about instead of % chance, all Autocannon barrels are given a heat meter of their own with their own heat threshold. Once it reaches critical, the weapon will 'jam,' and will unjam in 3-5 seconds (less or more depending on caliber). AC's will then produce "waste" heat (let's say half) that transfers to the Mech's heat meter. Done.

A % takes control out of the player's hands. Something that happens at random takes away a realistic, simulated skill factor. Someone that wants to 'dakka' all day without using controlled bursts, and not watching their AC heat meter will hence jam all day instead.
