None of the above since I don't have any money. My financial situation is so poor right now I am unable to continue college at this time, and I'm having to move back in with my mom. I would love to be able to pick one up, but as you can guess, that's not happening any time soon unfortunately, but at the very least I can help out the community as best i can still.

Not trying to hijack your thread. Just throwing out some possibilities.
For your $600 DIY system I would like to mention that the mobo is currently OOS. Also I havent researched that 965 BE ($100) cpu so I am not sure of OC potential but an alternative is the AMD FX-6100 ($120) ... 3.3ghz x6 @ 95watts. The only reason I mention this one is I had been looking for a possible upgrade for my HP prebuilt and came across this gem. AND I was too lazy to check every item so you may have been counting for some combo buys so my notes may be irrelevant.

edited for out of stock items.
and the FX-6100 is a better overclocker but is more expensive and would require downgrading on the GPU where there is more of a need in this graphics engine.

Again no experience with the Logisys case. I have however used the Antec 300 (currently my experimental box) it is currently $45 w/free s/h (same price as your Logisys case) but there is a $15 rebate on it as well making it $30.
And there is a combo deal on the above MSI board and AMD FX-6100. Feel free to tell me to bug off your thread.

For those interested in intel builds you can get the same build and substitute the Mobo/CPU for the following.

http://www.newegg.co...t=Combo.1032600
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116504

$1225

And if you already have a CPU cooler, or Win 7 obviously that drops it back under $1200

it's fine, i just generally do not use MIR in factoring in the price.

Totally understood. Mostly wanted to mention that FX-6100 as a possible alternative. Figured $600 vs $600-ish. I havent kept up with Tom's Hardware in a long time but I remember them doing similar posts and after a while instead of "Under $500" it was $500-ish.

Picked up 32GB (4x8) of DDR3 1600 RAM @CL9 for < 120 from Amazon yesterday. I think Newegg might also have a similar deal, but the other one I saw was only CL10.

Wish there were some decent sales on LGA2011 boards.

That would be great for the small portion of the people buying which already have the money to put out for such things and / or are needing one for a server or HPC buisnesswork.
For gaming, AM3+ or LGA1155 are far better value and it makes sense that the standard consumer-oriented products are those that are being offered as sales for those whom are looking for said low prices.

LGA1155 is better value right now, but when Ivy Bridge-E comes out I'll be ready to go. I don't always plan ahead for future upgrades, but when I can I do.

Got it from Amazon because I have a business account and don't pay taxes, and I'll always pay a bit more for Amazon's return policy as well. I don't pay shipping to return and have zero hassles.

edit: Having second thoughts about LGA2011 after all, I don't think the future looks especially promising for it.

Go AM3+ if you need HPC? higher power consumption but if you're stateside you'll still save using Vishera vs an i7-3770k despite power usage. (unless you're overclocking your system, then you likely want to go i7.)

I was really sold on LGA2011 but I think I'll just go with i7-3770k after all. Realistically I know I'll just do it all over again when Haswell hits. I think that will make more sense than having an expensively sub-par X79 system for a while for the sole purpose of having access to an expensive and underwhelming upgrade later.

Unless you're doing video transcoding or ultra processor heavy applications. . I'd scale it back to an i5 or 3850 if you're just gonna rebuild @ haswell anyway.

Newegg did have a 2011 board SOMEWHERE this morning for $149. . .

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813188121

Found it

As far as 2011 goes, it's gonna probably die after Ivy-E, but unless intel pulls out an INSANE performance boost in the next gen enthusiast processors it probably won't be worth even upgrading until whatever comes after THAT one. .

In other words, a 3930k should last you at least 5-6 years. . barring some breakthrough in software power usage. . or if you're doing the aforementioned transcoding or other insanely heavy processor intensive applications.

Figure if you build now and built again at haswell [which will use a different socket, I'm sure] you're probably still at the same price and performance point of doing Sandy-E correctly today.

It's all about what you wanna do though. I went 2011 just so I could knock myself out of the yearly upgrade loop for awhile. . my wife was starting to get P*SSED at my tech budget ;)

That's exactly the same thought process I had, but then I did some more reading and poking around. The things that concern me are: It seems like plans for the 2011 socket have already been scaled back from what was originally planned (this is pretty normal for Intel I think), when they do hit Intel won't care about pricing them competitively...they're an enthusiast part that they don't sell many of, and furthermore the quad channel memory that intrigued me is in all honesty practically useless. I can't think of any desktop or workstation scenario where the extra bandwidth would be noticeable or meaningful.

Don't get me wrong, that 3820 is a nice chip and I actually have one in the mail right now that I'll be sending back. But I'd rather have better performance right now and save a couple bucks because when the Ivy-Es come out for $1000 a pop I know I won't shell out for it.

edit: I did forget about the extra PCI-E lanes, which definitely is nice, but not enough to hook me. And yes, Haswell is definitely a new socket.
