And by best, I don't mean just what produces the highest Alpha strike.

Would rather focus on builds that are most effective overall in close range combat.

I am currently testing a D with AC/20, 2xSRM6's and 4xMLS.

Every available crit filled with DHS (18 total) using a standard 325 engine (I really like the little extra turn/twist)

4 tons of ac/20 ammo and 2 tons SRM

AMS w/1t ammo

Atlas RS with 4 PPC and 1 Guass.

55 damage alpha from across the map.

You not only do not want to be in front of me, you don't want to be in the same match as me.

I call it the Derp Gun, in honor of the 155m KV from WoT.

I use something similar, but I've upgraded the SRM6's with Artemis.

Fire them together with the AC20 and you've got a 50 damage concentrated blast.

The build currently has a LL in the torso an MLs in the arms, but I think I'll swap the LL for an engine upgrade. It's currently too slow when turning to be effective against lights, and the lack of long range weapons make it vulnerable to people just running away.

If you like REALLY short range: DDC using 2x LBX10 and 3 SRM6+Artemis. Standard 260 Engine. No Lasers, cause you need that weight for ammo...lots of ammo ;)

Remove Artemis, and you won't even need to aim. I call that variant the Barflas. Just spit in the general direction of a Jenner and watch him walk into a wall from the shaking cockpit. Chainfire for maximum effect.

@Greers, Itsacon: What's the reasoning behind the LBX10? I thought of a similar build, but with dual UAC/5s instead of the LBX10

Probably the one with TAG and about 4 LRM boats behind him. :P

I just came up with a K carrying 4 medpulse, SRM6, gauss, some extra ammo for both, AMS.

Added DHS, and with the waste tonnage I can "downgrade" to a standard engine for improved survivability, and STILL either upgrade the speed slightly or add two heatsinks.

The idea of an LBX (and SRMs without Artemis) is that the shot has a spread. So it's easier to hit something (even if not with your full blast). Especially when shooting at fast scouts, this can be an advantage.

Of course, in a one-on-one against another heavy, you'll lose vs the dual UACs or an AC20, since they can focus fire on your a single spot, while you're spreading damage all over their mech.
Things like the Barflas are either fun builds, or dedicated light-hunters (in which case swapping the SRMs for Streaks would probably be better)

Running my founders Atlas with 3 x ER LL and a Gauss. Anything within 660m gets a pin point accurate 42dmg to whatever location i want to blow up.

My D-DC i use for a brawler as lets face it the D-DC excels in terms of hard points. Might use the LBX-10 build or 2 x ML 1 x Gauss and 3 x SRM 6's depending on how i feel at the time. If they ever unfuck LRM's ( before the rage at that statement i know they was OP for a week and i wasn't referring to that period of their MW:O life ) I'd use my D-DC with 3 x LRM 15's and probably a gauss... I love the gauss...

Currently my D is running 2x Ultra AC/5, 2x SRM6, 4x Medium Lasers, with a 325 Standard Engine and 591 armor. It's a pretty good "Get Outta My Face" build, but it really shines as a heavy/assault support hunter. I'll probably buy a different Atlas today and try some other builds.

A better D-DC build would drop one SRM6 for a 4 and pack either 2 ML or 2MPL whilst mounting a quicker standard 325. I posted this build a while back. You can make room for all that by choosing Endo Steel structure and DHS. The extra speed gets you into range quick enough to be effective. No offence Greers, but I find your build has a number of weaknesses.

totally true

But I can cheaply switch into an LRM-Boat without having to remove DHS and Endo  I just switch the SRM for LRM20 (+Artemis) and Install 2 Large Lasers for the LBX. I find those upgrades too restrictive for changing an Atlas.

I'm running my AS7-D with 2x LBX-10 2x Artemis SRM6 and 4x Med Laser. I use it pretty effectively as heavy / assault hunter. I think main weakness aside from short range is that both side torsos are equally important so I can't sacrifice one of them as a shield.
