The idea of an LBX (and SRMs without Artemis) is that the shot has a spread. So it's easier to hit something (even if not with your full blast). Especially when shooting at fast scouts, this can be an advantage.
Of course, in a one-on-one against another heavy, you'll lose vs the dual UACs or an AC20, since they can focus fire on your a single spot, while you're spreading damage all over their mech.
Things like the Barflas are either fun builds, or dedicated light-hunters (in which case swapping the SRMs for Streaks would probably be better)
