Personally, I hope MWO on it's highest graphical settings will be just as demanding as Crysis 1 was when it was released. I have an awesome performing gaming computer, so I want this game to "give it a work out". My current 3DMARK11 benchmark- http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3331887

Building a gaming computer is not as expensive as one would think, if you do it the right way. I'm actually in the middle of gathering parts to build a 2nd computer with for http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ and http://folding.stanf...nglish/HomePage. Buying used, but not abused, computer parts saves alot of money. I have purchased a I7 860 1156 socket CPU and a GTX560 video card. I was given a gigabyte p55-ud3r motherboard and 2 gigs ddr3 G Skill RAM. A friend had a 160gb caviar blue hard drive laying around not being used. I already had a extra quality PSU and a decent aftermarket heatsink from previous computers I've had. Infact, the only thing I don't have for it yet is a case. Now the kicker, I have a total of $250 wrapped up in that computer, and I'm willing to bet it will out perform 80% of computers owned by MWO's comunity.

Not as many as there should be IMHO. Why not set your computer to do shared computing to find a cure for cancer, or diabetus, or alzphimers when your not using it. Just shut down WCG and Folding when you want to play a game or do something that needs the power your system has and restart it when your done.

That's not a unique case. I've had friends take advantage of lazy and/or generous Microsoft customer service reps by calling them and basically asking them for another key to install onto a new/upgraded computer.

Yeah, count me among those

You're not even supposed to be able to transfer a Windows OEM license. Supposedly that's the right you buy when you purchase a retail license for twice the price. But MS will still do it, in my experience, if you call. I've never gotten them to let me use a single CD key for more than one machine, but I've gotten them to transfer an OEM license probably a half dozen times over the past half dozen years for me and various other people.

I am quietly confident that my E Series Vaio will do fine. It runs modern high graphics games without any problems. Modern Warfare 3, Eve Online, Starcraft II.

On the topic of XP: at least it beats Vista. Also an idea is to use windows 8 beta and then just have to pay when the full version comes out.

Thats M$ gibberish.

You can run the same OS on multiple computers no problem at all (I currently have this very Win7 64bit OEM 1 PC on 2 PC's and a Laptop activated and fully working). And you most certainly can change motherboard and use the old copy of WIndows assuming you have the CD and Key, heck as long as you do not format the HDD it will work.

Did you not read my post? I said he's only going to have the CD and Key if he bought his copy of windows separately. He probably didn't, he probably has it as part of a prebuilt computer

Even with pre-built computer, Windows has an OEM license that, if I'm not mistaken, must be affixed to the side of the case with one those shiny stickers.

If not, he can still find the key using software. Back in the Win9X days, I think you used to be able to just look at the registry and it was right there, but even today, with the key encrypted, several free utilities can still read/show it. I like Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder, myself.

At that point, it's just a matter of getting an install disc, which one can torrent. Install the OS, call MS, see if they'll transfer the license, if not, a minimal amount of work was for naught. It's not guaranteed, but I think the chances of success more than warrant the effort.

Or like Vulpes said, use the Win8 beta for awhile and save for a new OS down the road.

I know this is vague, but I am in no way a tech anything, I just figured I'd ask; my PC runs MWLL really smoothly with next to no hitches at all, do you think it will be able to handle MWO alright?

Whilst the simple answer is, it likely will play it ok.

It would be better to hit us with your computer specs.

Correct, it should have the key labeled on the machine if it is an OEM build.

and what's even more sad is that after we brought it up, no one is talking about it, but instead are talking about some fake gayness called "Dora save my pony". People, please, atleast look into WCG or Folding. Try to do alittle good for the world.

Oh there's a lot more in the way of distributed computing applications then that. Some of the larger ones include Seti@Home (self explantory, maybe not tangibly useful, but still interesting), Climateprediction.net (help chew through the math on climate modelling), Milkyway@Home (help improve our models of the Milky Way), Einstein@home (searching for some such astronomical phenomena or another), and of course, there's dozens of others.

Save Folding@Home, most seem to use BOINC, so if anyone really wants to get into it, then here: https://boinc.berkel...du/projects.php
Keep in mind of course that this will stress hardware, constantly, for long periods of time, unless CPU/GPU dedication is turned down, and systems with overclocking are not ideal, as even slight instability (not necessarily enough to crash games, etc, and so not even necessarily apparently instability) can return erroneous results to those running the projects.

I wouldn't recommend doing it on laptops, either; they have thermally-caused reliability problems as it is, so running your CPU/GPU at 50-100% all day, every day, probably isn't the smartest thing to do. It's also a great way to up one's power bill, unless one has a decently efficient machine.

With all that said, it's certainly worth it to help society. Scientific research is struggling right now with funding, especially in the US, especially with the economy. Lending computer time gives a lot of free resources for scientists to conduct a lot of good research.

That's because it has nothing to do with the topic. I doubt anyone will complain about a brief discussion of distributed computing, but it's not as if there's some obligation for us to discuss it. If you feel that strongly, go make your own separate topic. I'm sure it'd be worth some discussion.

Also, it's not our fault if you're computer isn't awesome enough to handle Dora and Ponies ^_^

Posting a bit early as the results won't be known until tomorrow but...

Friend at work did a lot of detective work and found he could upgrade his HP's PSU so he could then upgrade his GPU. Will check back tomorrow to report how it went but he had high hopes as the 700watt PSU was 1/2" shallower than his stock 300 watter is. He's going with the 6770 (iirc) so much anticipation as to how well it will turn out. He's doing it to run D.III so it will be interesting.
