Ideally, you'd max out armour and carry 4 Gauss Rifles and 8 Medium Lasers, but we always have to make trade-offs - where do you make your trade-offs? If you need a bit of extra tonnage, where on your mech do you remove some armour first? Where do you store your ammo so that you don't have to worry so much about ammo explosions? Do you rely on CASE?
Do you risk going out in your Assault or your Light Mech without maxing out armour?

At minimum I have Stock Armor or Better.

I do not dare ever go lighter than that. I might change how the armor is balanced on two facings of the mech depending on circumstance but yeah...

going lighter than stock, to me is just asking for trouble.

Especially on Dragons, and Medium mechs.

It depends on what style of mech I am going for.

If I want a fast striker mech that is not ment to get into the frey, I will drop some tonnage in armor to even out the build.

Usually I don't reduce my armour, but if I do it's probably from the unimportant arms or legs, and I do so on a mech by mech basis. I would not take armour off a Jenner's legs for instance :)

At the moment I'm using an Hunchback 4H so I need all the armour I can get. But when I used a Dragon in the past I used to remove some armour from the left arm and legs.

I usually throw away leg armour first. Even if I equip ammo there. People don't try to leg very often anymore, even though getting legged is still a death sentence IMO. But at least with ammo stored there it's over quickly. :)

I go for the legs. Precisely because people take that armor off.
And it's really awesome, when I'm already faster than a given enemy and then I half his speed. :D I actually had one guy say "you are already running rings around me! Did you really have to leg me?!"

My response was "yes".

Especially when someone has ammo in the legs :)

Should have enabled the option to let us see what people voted about ammo storage location and where they skimp on armor. I would have taken detailed notes

:)

One of my best loadouts in mw4 was a Ryoken with maxed armor, a LG X-pulse laser, and clan ultra 10 ac. With a 105 kph top speed. I will often skimp on weaponry, in favor of the dual benefits of mobility and speed. As shown by the lights in this game, if your gunnery is good, you don't have to release a wall of death with each salvo to be dangerous. I usually try to avoid true boats, since they often have crippling overspecialization. My version of a gauss cat for example trades 2tons of ammo for 2 med lasers in the arms, so now I'm not completely defenseless when someone is directly above or below me. (I can shoot them even if they're out of my gauss rifle's firing arc.)

Hehe.

Unfortunately I forget to add the Rear Torso sections as option. Dang.

Speaking of legging people. Ever see a 4X cataphract who only has one leg?
It's like watching a paraplegic try to run in a 100 meter dash.

A 4X is slow anyway... so legging it doesnt really make much of a difference. But if you leg a Jenner the difference in speed is HUGE.

Legging one makes it all but impossible for the 4x to get his back to a wall before being severely maimed I've found. It also makes any emergency evasions much easier :)

I notice it when I leg a 4X. About the only one I don't notice it as much on is when I leg a Fatlas.

Any mech 50 tons or more has its legs shaved to between 30-40 points each if I'm short the necessary tonnage for the build I'm putting together, never more than that range, and never less. Otherwise, I max the armor on the rest of the mech unless I have an arm without anything valuable in it. I may keep armor on that arm as a shield, but only if I don't need that tonnage for something else.

With light mechs or Cicadas, I max out the armor including the legs always, though again I will remove armor from unused arms if I could use it elsewhere.

When I start sacrificing armor, I generally whittle away at sections that don't serve much of a useful purpose... Such as the arms on the Cicada (the one with torso mounted weapons of course).

Legs I like to try keeping at the armor level of the front of the side torso. If I still need more weight, I then decrease armor on the torso sections roughly evenly.

My Mech's main week spot is it's pilot... no amount of armor makes up for stupid!
