How about... "Lone Wolf"?

Personally, I hate the "lone wolf" moniker and clichè. It's just so... wrong. A 'lone wolf', that is, a wolf without a pack, is a soon-to-be-dead wolf. However, replacing it with "bounty hunter" is no better. Perhaps "soldier of fortune" would be better and more accurate, in that they act sort of like unaffiliated mercenaries, but that phrase is a bit long.

I'd say that a mechwarrior without a lance, company, or house is soon to be dead too. A single mech is soooo much scrap, even infantry and light armor can take a single mech.

Unaffiliated pilots really don't deserve, by default, any kind of "Lone wolf" title. That really insinuate they are pro/expert players that rack up huge damage and and choose to be lone gunmen, when really, that accounts for probably less than one tenth of one percent of the unaffiliated population.

Most Freelancers A.K.A. Lone Wolves are people like myself who do not find the Houses or Merc Corps even inviting so we choose to use our skills this way until one of the Current options appeals to us. Do many think they are Pro/Expert players as Victor has stated Not many that I have seen and those that do well, usually are far from it.

Lone Wolves are really just individual mercenaries.

True, true. They just don't have the support of working with pilots that they know that they can trust.

Lone wolves would soon be dead wolves in the BTU. They should just be wrapped into the merc system with a unit strength of 1 from a game perspective.

I like freelance.
Lone wolf sounds like a some sort sociopath or shut-in. A freelancer is an independant contractor (which would also be good). Lets face it if you are a solo mechwarrior you need some people skills to get contracts. Unless you want to be cannon fodder.

Agreed. I like "Mercs" myself.

I think PGI chose "Lone Wolves" because "Soon-to-be-Dispossessed-Idjuts" was too verbose.

The only term I'd use instead of Lone Wolves would be 'Freelancers'. It's the term used in the novels, but I don't mind Lone Wolves either.

I think I would prefer to think of myself as an 'Independent Mortality Technician', though. At least, until the Clans arrive.
