We still have until December 4th for Phase 2 matchmaking, which will introduce 8v8 team matches. What 8-man team will reign supreme? It is clear that boats are very effective, so a boat loaded with boats is going to be some sort of meta super boat (kind of like shooting Urbanmechs out of your AC20)

A combo of mechs. 2-3 Missile boats depending on how many missiles they carry. 3-4 med/close ranged brawlers and 1-2 lights with Tag.

With the game metrics as they are... Id say a mix. Though Im leaning toward 7 guass cat and 1 scout. As metrics change, so will team configurations.

Using only one mech for everyone on the team does not sound like a great idea...

Since it looks like the teams will have no restrictions there's going to be no reason to field mediums, and you can take your pick of decent builds in heavies, perhaps with a few Atlas' and of course the fast lights. 1-2L 4-6H 0-3A

I don't think there is anything that could beat 8 gauss cats that work together. Streak cats won't even get near, and if some of them do, they will get picked off quickly by focus fire. You need to remember that while streak cats are annoying, they are slow at killing.

i would agree with you for the most part, but the only draw back to them is ammo.. you get enough of them to miss and they will run out and then what do you have? A 65T paper weight.

You can fit in 80 ammo without having to sacrifice armor (I think little leg armor has to go? can't remember exactly). That's 640 gauss shots which is 9600 damage. You can miss over 80% of the shots and still do enough damage to kill 8 enemy mechs.

Lagshield MLaser Jenners... lagshield Jenners by far! No question!
But lagshield MLaser + SSRM Jenners are pretty brutal too!

The listed teams do have some weaknesses, the gauss team would get eaten alive by Jenners or Ravens, and possibly Dakka-phracts, but would probably be very effective against laser boat teams and streak teams.
My personal choice is 8x Catapult with 5x SSRM2 + 1x LRM20 (or possibly 4x SSRM + 2x LRM15) all moving at 75+ kph. It will give you the long range (indirect) firepower, and the ability to dismantle most lights, it could struggle against laser-heavy base rushers, although vertical movement is effective against laser boats.
