Right now they do too little damage to make it worth equipping. They have stated they plan on upping its damage soon though. I would wait until then.

Restrictions to the weapon is that it needs a ballistic slot. As far as I know, there are no mechs with a ballistic slot in the head

Each MG takes one ballistic hardpoint and a critical slot. Ammo takes one critcal slot per ton.

Edit: Also, they're not really useful at the moment; they do 0.04 damage per hit, 10 hits per second for a grand total of 0.4 DPS. Three of them does about half the damage of a light laser, for more than three times the weight.

They are slated for an undisclosed damage buff in the near future though, and hopefully that will make them useful. At the moment, you're better off using those tons for other things. ANY other thing.

A machine gun takes up one ballistic hardpoint, just like a gauss rifle, an AC20, or an AC2.

The cataphract is current the mech with the most ballistic hardpoints - it can carry four machine guns if you want. That would be an astounding waste of a mech.

There's a psychological element to them. The average pilot hears pinging on his armor and the mg noise, and it distracts him and sometimes breaks his focus. I use them for this, and to tear up internals.

I have a pretty good working Hunchy-build with
1 ER LL
1 LPL
1 MPL
3 Machine Guns

The thing is: When armor is off, the machine guns rip the internals apart in a second due to so many bullets hitting it with crits.
It's a great assist mech and brawler for me.

This has been disproved numerous times; just about any other weapon is more likely to destroy internals and equipment.

Why? Because a crit is x1 (25% chance), x2 (14% chance), or x3 (3% chance) damage, and each internal component has 10 health. So the maximum damage a single round from a MG could do is 0.04 x 3, or 0.12 damage. That means it needs 84 x3 crits to completely destroy a component. That's 8.4 seconds of continuous fire (and x3 crits!) to destroy a component. If you don't get any crits or just x1 crits, you need to fire for 25 seconds to destroy just one component.

The HBK-4G is the only Hunchback that can mount three ballistic weapons.

That is probably the weirdest Hunchback loadout I've ever seen, including the "9 flamers" variant. All your weapons have different effective ranges; half of them produce bucketloads of heat; and you've devoted all your ballistic hardpoints to weapons which can't knock the skin off a rice pudding. How on Earth do you make it work?

It works for me. It's not better than my 4P but it holds very well. The machine guns are a good annoyance and I can aim very good (and far!) with my lasers. I tried every ballistic out there on this build but nothing was working as good as this. The ballistic weapons all have a too high tonnage cost to be implemented in a hunchy at the moment + lag shield is really an issue. The MPL is in the head and the large lasers on the arms.

Most aim for the hunch so it will be off first anyway together with one arm. Still I got 2 good lasers to brawl afterwards.

oh and PS: all weapons are good for close-combat.
