This is a free game. You don't have to pay for anything. I have 8 'mechs since open beta and have bought 5 of them with c-bill only. (3 I bought with my first NON-founder MC purchase before open beta)
That being said, you would have to be incredibly selfish, and ignorant to think that you can simply have EVEN the cosmetic items for free. Skins are the bread and butter of FTP games as while only a fraction of players ever pay any at all (real money) the fraction that do pay, such as myself, often buy things every week because we can afford to do so. We are the real lifeblood of this game and those who pay nothing are welcome, but their opinion should not be of first concern. I agree it should be FAIR for paying and nonpaying players in terms of combat. But anything else is fair game to charge for.
You want to have a cool looking 'mech with fuzzy dice? Get a job. As for kids whose parents don't let them use their card. Either your parents are right and you don't deserve it, or you should save up and get a re-loadable card from almost any store these days.
P.S.
Rebuttal to "why spend money on 'nonreal' items in a game?"
This is a very flawed argument that I hear often. Why spend money on "code". But this is an absurd argument! It is the same as asking why spend money on sporting events, or other video games, or for the internet, or for good food over more food. Why EVER choose quality of quantity? Because we are not merely surviving, we all wish to live in the highest quality of life possible. It is not your place to determine what is and isn't a worthwhile expenditure of funds, nor to criticize anyone else's choices in this matter. Unless, of course, you actually don't own anything but what you "need" but in that case you wouldn't be on the internet.

A Preemptive Discussion Of Skin Costs.

I wouldn't give PGI another two cents right now anyways so some flunky skins in order to generate revenue means absolutely zero to me.
Fix the game first.

Exactly what are your credentials on which you base knowing anything about game development?. You cant "just fix" ****. Sometime problems take months to trackdown and fix. You just dont notice this usually because you usually played finished products. Or, in the case of many indie game beta, relatively simple games. But even in the case of a game like Minecraft, which I played since alpha. There were many bugs, and still are quite a few. The difference is in that game you arent playing PvP (much) so bugs that would be glaring in a high intensity fight to the e-death are virtually invisible.

It is a good idea in a way to allow a little free customization. This will draw some people in who would not otherwise pay for custom features, and there will inevitably be some that they desire that are premium content, producing more custom content customers. The free customization could also gain players who would like to spend MC on mechs and premium time in order to add those free custom features.
My main complaint, and what I thought the theme of the thread was going to be about is the actual cost of the customization in MC, which if you look at the screen caps is quite high. I have 36,000 MC to kill but I'd rather buy premium time than flip my paint back and forth. I was hoping that if you spend MC on paint, you could AT LEAST save your pattern as a skin to apply whenever you want, or be able to apply it to multiple mechs, a la PC Gamer skin.
