I have an ASUS M5A97 with enough RAM and CPU to allow the GT 430 to limp by at ultralow settings with 30fps but alas, the gods have shown their disfavor after the last patch.

I need to upgrade the GPU but i need to keep it under $100 (i'm stuck with PCI 2.0). I am not worried about having high graphic settings.

halp. i do ok with most computer stuff but VPU nomenclature blows flippin my mind. On my own i'd go for this GT 620, but y'all can make fun of me for that, nbd. I have nbo paticular preference for nvidia/radeon

PCIe 3.0 Cards also work in a PCIe 2.0 slot. It doesen´t matter. ;)

I think a HD7850 or a GTX660ti would be the better card.

Honestly, if your budget is $100, this Radeon HD 7750 would be your best bet. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102969
The GT 620 is a very, very slow card. Slower than the $50 Radeon HD 6450 which averages about 6 frames per second in Crysis (albeit at 1080p. But still.) It would not be an upgrade to your 430.

I'd ebay an AMD HD5850 for that price range...

is there not anything viable between the 430 and the 7750?

There is, however for MWO a Radeon HD 7750 is going to be the minimum you're looking at for 1080p gaming. The 6770 is just as fast but less power efficient, and they occupy the same price point. If you drop down to 720p gaming, these would be quite viable for the $50-$75 price range, if you're willing to get a refurbished card and have the PSU for it, this 550ti would be a good buy; http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814500283
And for somewhat less but a good bit less performance, you can pick up an older GT 9800, though you'll sacrifice the ability to run modern games in DX 11. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130534
And as a lower power draw choice, the Radeon HD 6670; http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814102988

Honestly, I wouldn't drop below any of these and hope to run MWO at any decent level.

You could also check out newegg and such for deals, being the Xmas season and all. I saw a 6870 on sale for $120 after rebate the other day. This is after MIR, and it's pushing the price a bit, but where there's one sale there are others.

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814150561

It's pushing it, granted, but the performance difference between the 7750 and the 6870 can be substantial

[mind you the above link is a generality and expected results, not full blown bench tests]

Bingo. Short of catching a good Christmas season deal, this is the best advice for you, OP.

A Radeon HD 5850 can be had for $80 on Ebay, and will net you 60fps on medium at 1920x1200, at least mine does. I haven't tried high yet.

1080p is a non issue for me, won't be upgrading monitors any time soon (presently 1680x1050)

Given that, I am between 6670 and the 550ti. However, I run maya and nuke quite a bit and i want to know if that 40 dollars between the 7750 is going to make a significant difference with those programs.

The 550ti would be on par with the 7750 in GPGPU, and the 6670 is quite a bit behind. Basically in terms of performance, the 7750 will perform the same as the 550ti but it is far more energy efficient.
