Hypothetically, if I play as a dedicated scout and outlive the rest of my team would I have to get myself killed to end the match (and incur a hefty repair bill), or is there a retreat from battle option for such circumstances?

Based on the released vids with a timer I would guess you could probably run all over the map to run down the timer if you wanted to, but that's just a guess. If there is a base capture option the game would probably end if the enemy team decided to base cap rather than chasing you.

3 "round end conditions"

1 > All Mechs on 1 team are destroyed
2 > A base is taken
3 > Round timer expires

Well, the opposing team could just cap your base, or you could kill them 1 by 1. ;)

Or you could eject. It isn't confirmed but it has been suggested that safely ejecting should incur less of a repair bill than being outright destroyed.

EJECTING!

He always died on THE FIRST MISSION I would bring him into. Scarab was invincible on my squads.

Yeah I never liked Beast. Lynx and Hunter were AWESOME though. By the time I could afford Scarab, they were already so tough that Scarab was an afterthought. Also I always reloaded until I got the Madcat on mission 3 with most of the weapons. That's a little bit meta-gaming, but that game was hard enough on harder difficulties, if you had no heavies, forget it.

Also Beast sounds like a total whiner. Not much of a Beast at all really

I swear, I could head-shot that sucker perfectly and still not salvage it half the time...

yeah I was never quite satisfied with my salvaging systems. Allegedly many hits with smaller damage would increase your chances, but it didn't seem to be much better then random to me. I would just surround him with 4 mechs and leg him. At that range all he had were flamers, and he couldn't really maneuvre. ok...

OT,
I hope there is a retreat option, I don't want to be losing equipment to foregone conclusions

I'm kind of hoping for a percentage victory thing.

i.e. if one team drops below 20% intact 'mechs, it triggers a 5 minute countdown to end the round if the other team stays above that. It'd fit the spirit of the game pretty well, include the idea of retreats (to avoid repair bills) and prevent scout camping.

If there was a match option: Deathmatch, then I'd guess it would be "war and peace" rules (Everyone Dies!). I can see how this could be a concern, especially if ammo runs out and everyone has lost their energy weapons, but those circumstances would just be a plain 'draw' result. In such circumstances I think a voting mechanic involving all players would be initiated.

'End match, no winner? Y/N'

But who knows what contingencies they have planned.

couldn't we have an area of operations boarder stay outside for 8 seconds to act as a retreat when 2/3 of your side dies. just incurr a c-bill penalty to whom ever leaves like this say its because your dropship pilot needs an incentive for a pick up in a hot zone. not for death matches though, just for the objective based modes where you don't have to kill the defending team to win

Definitely hoping ejecting is not an option. If you eject, and your team loses the field, you just lost your mech to salvage (realistically). Why would this behavior be rewarded in this game? I think it is a bad idea for game mechanics to promote ejecting, and it will likely be abused and used as a griefing tool.
