I know there are more important tasks at hand, but the first thing I do with any PC game is head straight for the graphics options and mess with things until I can pretty much max out the settings but keep things at a good frame rate. As this is a multiplayer only game, I'd very much appreciate being able to gauge my FPS before dropping into a match. Perhaps a run through of a scripted scene of a 12v12 battle, complete with falling trees, water reflections, exploding mechs, etc.? Anyone with me here?

OR.. you could trust the "default" graphics options which are chosen by the game, dependant on your hardware. Tweak it as desired.

CryEngine 3 can do that easily, so I've no doubt that we'll see it in MWO.

Well I was easily able to max out Crysis 2, though it preset me just below max. Even then, I think Crysis 2 had a benchmark anyways. I just don't want to end up bumping Post-Processing or something up a notch only to have me join a match and suffer horrible frame rates, die fairly easily, and let my team down.

There aren't many graphics options (barring things that tick off software bugs) that will degrade your fps to the extent that you won't be able to play a round, just because you turned them up by a notch or two.

Sure, if you set something major to max, when you had it smoothly running at min, you're probably gonna feel it, but you should really know your computer better than that.

I can't think of any games that do what you're asking.

You mean a benchmark test? Really? All the Crysis games, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes, Mafia 2, Metro 2033, Half-Life 2, Supreme Commander... any good looking game basically.

Yeah I know my computer very well, but I hardly know how well the game is optimized for performance. I mean I thought I would be running BF3 at low-medium settings. Turns out I can run high to ultra because the engine is so well optimized, and I'm running on a laptop. A gaming laptop but a laptop nonetheless.

And you won't know how well it'll do until you play it. You'll find out in the first match. The good thing about being an early adopter in a game like this is that everyone is going to be terrible until they figure it out, which will leave plenty of time to sort out your settings.

I'm not against the idea of having a way of testing your comp's ability to handle the game. I'm sure that many people will love it. I go by the game's recommended settings usually, and as I said, tweak them until I get the result I want.
As far as I'm concerned, this goes in the "the devs have more important things to do" basket.

Also, fair call on the games with tests. I've only played HL2 and the SC series out of those listed, and I jumped straight in without testing. Perhaps more games than I expected have the feature, but I've never had to use it.
