This is standard fare for a multi-button mouse. If the mouse isn't programmed for the game what you need to do is (if using Logitech) use SetPoint and make 4 and 5 act as the NUMBER key you want them to work for.
I only run 4 weapon groups so it's not really an issue. I didn't have to do anything with SetPoint with my G700 for this game, but for a few others I did. For me it's G7/G6 that aren't recognized. I also use wheel click for Alpha Strike

Yeah, multibutton mouse support is a p.i.t.a., especially between different games.

Use logitech SetPoint to change the mouse bindings from "Forward" and "Back" to "Generic Button" for both of them.
Literally every piece of software with a forward and back feature defaults those commands to Mouse Button 4/5 anyway. Once you've changed the SetPoint settings, go into game and set your controls and as you would normally and it will now properly recognize Mouse Button 4/5.

Is it a logitech mouse? Do you have any special button profiles for your mouse?

The default has a special profile for those two buttons. They are set to "forward" and "back" functions. Choose the "other" radio button and in the options choose "generic button".
Do the in the gloal set point options. Don't bother with application specific settings.
Here I'll just upload an image
