how does merging down layers, while keeping the "lower layer's" setting?
i tried to merge a layer with an insignia with the paint/multiply layer...but as soon as i do that, the alpha mask etc is gone

currently GIMP is not working very well for me :(

Save your project befor merging down as .xcf...than merge down an save with other name or format. So you can keep your layers and you can show us your result.
To work later on your project again simply open your .xcf file :P

i've found the mistake:
when merging layers, it is wrong to "merge down" every single layer...
i got an "intended" result, when i right clicked and selected "merge all visible layers"...is that the correct way to do so?

and i have two other problems with gimp:
1 (and most important): how do i remove the insignias on the concept art? i tried the stamp tool, but either it isn't working as i'd like it to...or i'm merely incompetent

2: when adding my own insignias: i want the insignia to get the underlying texture...so i merge it with the "paint" layer...only problem is...everytime i do that, i lose the alpha mask of the "paint layer" - how can i avoid that?

Try to think of it like this.....

merging is permanent, layers you can change..

reading this you see the white text on the grey/black background, the text is layered on the grey/black background therefor you can change the color to red, green whatever...
if it was permanent (merged) when you changed the color everything goes red, green, whatever..

can you post the image your working with so we (BFett, Steiner, Bushmaster and myself) can look at to help you?

I would like to add that changing the Mode that the image is in to softlight may help make the emblem see through.

As long as you don't plan to sell the image you will be alright. Personally I use photobucket.com which is easy to use, and gives you 2 gigs of free space. To put that in perspective I have about 80 images uploaded there and have used about 1% of the space.

I have been finding some very good sites for adding GIMP Brushes like
"http://www.noupe.com/tools/1000-free-high-resolution-gimp-brushes.html"

These are simple to use and easily installed. though making your own custom brushes to suit your own application is most likely preferred.

Very nice animation in your signature. Are you still painting mechs?

Hey BFett,

Yea, still doing the signature bit. loving every minute of it.... I still have two DC mechs to convert and post on Haydens thread then I still have six Marvel conversions to do..

I gave up on that masking issue, I found out that masking is used only to protect the background of a preset image and to keep it looking the same, now that the primed MWO templates are out it's just a simple copy/paste to put it into position...
I have found that working on a transparent is the easiest for me. I just open a file, add layer/background transparent, copy/paste, then delete the original.
Then I can do the most wonderful things to it, save as .png, open a background, open the .png, copy/paste, blend/gaussian, color and BOOM! put it away!

My largest one to date is 22 layers 42.5MB in a .xcf file, that's not counting these animated ones...wow they get into the 60 and 70's layer range...

how about you?
