I won't lie, I'm not all that knowledgeable as to MW lore. but I have really gotten into it since hearing about MW:O. after reading through a lot of forum topics and ISN news flash and such, I brought up a question with a friend, "why not have melee weapons in MW:O?". I beleive they could be a viable weapons choice on small, lightweight, scouting mech. something that would allow them to run in close from behind and drop some major damage on a larger mech, afterwards they would be able to high-tail it out of there. what do you guys think? perhaps the melee weapons could have some sort of durability, or a cool-down between each strike?

Not only is melee combat possible in tabletop, it's a viable means of combat. Hell, I'd be lying if I said some games didn't devolve into matches of "Rockem' Sockem' robots". For that matter, I'd love to see the Battlemechs be portrayed as something more than just "Tanks with legs"; Just because they're not scooting on plasma jets or roller scates like a robot from gundam or armored core doesn't mean that they should only move like a morbidly obese man with arthritis. Sure they're slow and jerky, but the only reason they're portrayed as being less flexible than your average back-hoe arm is programming difficulty.

That's just my concern - I would love to see melee come into the game, but I can't honestly see how it could be programmed into the game while still feeling fluid. Some fan games - like Blender Battletech - tried to incorporate fisticuffs into the simulation, but every time it came out feeling rather wonky and forced. I'd love to see it introduced into the game franchise, if only to silence new players to the franchise that react to finding out about melee combat being in Battletech as though they'd just found out they'd have to kill and eat their own pet, but it would have to be done in a way that feels smooth and natural with the command scheme.

there is melee in the mw universe but I tend to dought you will see it in a computer game yet. To have your axeman swing his axe and hit an opponet takes a good deal more calculations than you shooting something at them. Take a simple example you pull out your gun on a monster and shoot. Games generally (in a manner of speaking) freezes time when you pull trigger to shoot .computer then calculates your trajectory of your bullet to where your aiming at your bad guy, In that instant since both targets are not moving its not too hard for it to figure whether you hit or miss and if you hit what happens next. When you do melee more things have to be figured into the equation. The blow is not instant, in the time that the blow happens you are moving and so is your opponet, The weapon such as an axe or hatchet is moving in a arc through space, so the computers tracking three 3 dimensional masses through a small area over a time period while still tracking laser fire missles and the like. You get lucky you hit the bad guy he didnt block your hit, computer now has to figure out just where you hit him, what armor value is at that point where it hit, was it enough to stop the blow if not how deep did your blow go and what damage did it do to your opponet, if the weapon was deflected on its arc where does it go. If you swing your axe as an axeman and it misses does that throw you off your balance? If you try to kick the atlas in the jewels will you foot make it with out throwing you off balance and to the ground. Melee adds allot more work for the servers to try to track the outcomes of each melee and the lasers and everything else. It tends to be hard enough for creaters to have the mechs look like they are actually walking correctly accross the ground. Living Legends tends to have that problem at times. If you look at some of the in battle fottage of mwo you might see some misstiming esp jenner. There are maybe games out there but I havent seen one where melee attacks seem real and you can control them more than just running up to some one and pound on your button as fast as you can. I have my dought that we will see anything near real melee for some time to come in mech world unless its just two opponets and all it is is melee.. Computers need to get faster still I think. Though I guess they could make a melee attack button and like in wow or other games you select the melee choice then mash down on the button as fast as you possibly can on the button while the computer just shows you generic animation of the two mechs fighting...

are your eyes hurting yet ? humm

From the FAQ:

Q. Will MechWarrior® Online™ have Mech melee combat?

A. At this point in time we are not looking at melee combat. We may revisit melee combat if we can design something that is fun and does not compromise the overall gameplay experience.
