Ok, so I used to be able to convert mech xp to gxp. I'm no longer seeing the option and the cost of the pilot tree modules seems crazy high for the slow GXP earning rate. Am I missing something?

You need to own the chassis/variant in order to convert the MXP to GXP
Yes Modules are spendy, they are the endgame items.
