I disagree with the need for friendly fire big red letters. However a tutorial in the game would still be nice and could incorporate this.
I don't mean to flame but if you are taking a large amount of damage to your back side on a regular basis you are running into the line of fire of mechs behind you. The issue may be that you are not playing with your team instead of the other way around. Check your HUD and line of fire of mechs behind you before engaging. But of course it depends on the situation so I could be incorrect.

I disagree. I have been teamkilled twice in the back while not moving (don't have a lot of rear armor), and have taken all sorts of damage in the back while moving in straight lines, or when a teammate starts firing into me after I have already been set up circle-strafing an enemy for a little while.
I don't notice it as much in-game, but I record some of my matches and it's pretty obvious after the fact.
I also have a funny video where I got backed into a corner near the lower-side tunnel entrance on forest by a centurion with full armor. I was pretty beat up and essentially screwed, and then suddenly my opponent was shot in the back with a ballistic round from a hunchback on his own team and exploded. Even funnier was the fact that the hunchback continued on his merry way in another direction and completely ignored me, so I was able to survive the match.
