I'm sure people have already suggested that we have some way of having our own custom banners or in-cockpit toys or similar things, but perhaps we could implement these in a meaningful manner that does not take anything on the server end.
For example, have a specific file in the game directory, perhaps under a specific folder (for all custom content) that the game will access for a texture to use in the game for, example, a banner.
Then, of course, give everyone a little guideline as to the ideal way to make a banner (e.g. a PNG 1000x2000px).
Thus, as an example, I could have a custom banner file:
Mechwarrior Online\Custom Content\banner.png
The game would load up this .PNG file and apply it to the banner as a texture so that I have my own custom banner in the cockpit. As banners are in-cockpit and often to the side, spectators will usually not see them, while the player him/herself gets to enjoy it. Or if for some reason they can see a custom banner in another user's cockpit while spectating, they'll see their own.
Furthermore, this method does not require anything on the server's side, beyond, possibly some anti-cheat check (to make sure it's an image file and doesn't contain any sort of hacking or scripts hidden. There can also be a default placeholder image in place for users who don't bother editing the aforementioned example's banner.png.
We could also have in a similar way, dashboard items and the sorts, or paint schemes. I also have no complaint about a customizable item (in this fashion) being more expensive than a normal one, given that it is technically freely replaceable at any time.
I know CryENGINE 3 supports mods. Crysis (and Crysis 2) have plenty of mods floating about, using the engine's .pak files. I don't see why there shouldn't be some way to use this for players.
