lol, so what your saying is: MWO is not for the casual gamer, thus the F2P model was a huge mistake on PGI's part???

F2P is meant to be "enjoyed" by the casual gamer. and a casual gamer will not DL a program for a program, just to enjoy a F2P game. Sorry guy. Now wheres PGI going to get it's money?? from the mere 4,000 who still stubbornly chose to stay?? (I've already payed, so I might as well stick around)

Where did I say that? I'm saying if you absolutely must win most of the time to enjoy the game then you need to coordinate with your team mates. It's not rocket science that voice comms >> typing comms.

Also I do not understand why you equate VOIP != causal players. I'm a casual player and I would use VOIP. I haven't yet for MWO since my merc corp members are all in different time zones and I don't play enough to see most of them online.

right, the issue with 3rd party VOIP lies with the statement "DL teamspeak, you'd get more help playing the game there".... seriously?? They need a 3rd party program to help the new players tell them how to play, and hopefully, enjoy the game.....

thats the fatal error

You don't NEED to, but it helps a great deal. Being able to talk to someone with a voip is a hell of a lot easier than trying to help someone with a forum post.

The problem isn't that.

The problem is that so many people expect others to get on TeamSpeak to have any amount of fun, or be at all competitive, and sneer at the people who can't or won't because they can't justify it or they don't feel like/feel comfortable having to download an entire other program and then get to know strangers just to play a game.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I hadn't had TS already before getting into the closed beta, I just wouldn't have bothered with it, because it's just d@mned weird.

Creating an integrated VOIP would solve that problem.

when the casual gamer decides being victorious is a prerequisite to him having fun, he has conceded his desire to be competitive. and is thus no longer a "casual" gamer. and should thus have no issue with getting teamspeak

Casual gamers have as much right to victories as a "real" gamer. Wanting to win does not make one a hardcore.

Not really, many games give you the ability to hide portions of your avatar in cover. Think of it as the difference between leaning around a corner, and running out, shooting, running back in again.

with the sheer size of a mech and its limited mobility compared to a human youre not going to be able to find or use cover like that in most cases
There are some building and other structures in certain part of the city map that offer coverage like that but when youre piloting a mech the size of a large building your choices on cover are limited...

What I feel wrong about is the fact that this is BETA :D

You never know what map is going to be next, who's going to be on your team, which mech should fit best the next operation.

I wish they realized the following algorithm for battles:

1. Choose 'ready to fight' server.
2. Automatically sign in into one of teams (with friends, if possible).
3. See the game mode, the map, the free mech slots (every mode should have different types of mechs range or at least tonnage). So to say, some modes may have the following limitations:

3.a. max 8 players per team
3.b. 500 tonns of total for the attacking side and 600 for the defending side
3.c. 2 assault, 2 heavy, 2 medium, 2 light mechs per team
3.d. and so on...

4. Choose one of your fitting mechs or just grab a trial mech that would suit.
5. Start the engine

- Weapons and heat. Every weapon in this Game got certain advantages and disadvantages.
fast firing or not ammunition dependant weapons generaly build heat up fast and/or do less dmg.
Weapons that are firing slow, or and/or are ammunition dependant do comparabily less damage and the heat build up is slower.
--> Find a balance between firing many weapons, refire rate and ammo usage. Don't always fire all your weapons for you will be forced to wait some time to be able to fire them again.
YOU WILL WANT TO BE ECONOMICAL WITH YOUR HEAT MANAGEMENT
This is far more pronounced in this implementation of MW.
Use singlefire in your weaponsgroup if unsure or group your weapons in a way you can fire smal groups of similar weapons without overheating.

- Do I Damage ?
As mentioned try to shoot single weapons first to get a feeling for them and ALLWAYS press R to lock onto your enemy. His Armor indicator at the upper right of the screen will tell you the dmg he has taken. The RIMS of the hit zones are the enemy ARMOR. The inner ZONES are his INTERNALS. Gray = undamaged, Yellow = scratched, Orange = notable Damage, Red = Worn up, Black = gone.

- Hitting without getting hit.
Very Very dependant on the Mech you use.

Smal Mechs speed speed speed and the ability to accelerate much faster than your enemy could anticipate. Corners and walls are your friends. Step out shoot step in.
Ridgelines are nice....for getting shoot. Set emphasis on lateral covering possibilitys dont go up down.

Medium mechs are prety much like lights but Mechs like Hunchie with his shoulder cannon are nice for up down movements at ridgelines. Centurion NOT. The P and G Hunch can do as well short and long range sniping with its shoulder modules installed that high on the mech. Large AC, Gauss or dual PPCs are your friends.

Heavy mechs are .... flexible. The Dragon is fast and nimble hiding behind corners doing a strafing run and hiding again. The Catapults main ability is indirect fire support, jump sniping and beeing able to snipe over ridgelines without exposing much of himself ( this needs training ).
The cataphract is better suited for lateral movement.

Assaults are NO I win vehicles. They are large targets and generate a lot of hate from your enemy. So never go alone. You wont be able to find cover in time when you get ambushed without the help of your support mechs. Without your rearguard and with an enemy Jenner pilot blessed with more than three working braincells you're dead meat.
DON'T try vertical movement (ridgelines) in an Atlas. DON'T stay still, move your torso, divert hits you have lots of armor, use it.

Thats about it.

Then you should know that it was always like this, even in Mechwarrior 2.

Casual gamers have as much right to victories as a "real" gamer.

Nobody has a right to victory. Victory is earned, either by superior individual skill, or by superior teamwork.

For MWO, teamwork is arguably more important than individual skill, so people who make teamwork easier by using voice comms tend to be more victorious than those who for whatever reason don't.

You can enjoy MWO without voice comms and dropping solo; I've done so since early August, and I have a 1.25 win/loss ratio (meaning I'm in more victories than defeats). But it's *easier* to win if you use voice comms and play in a group where people know each other and what the others are likely to do. That doesn't mean it's impossible to win or have fun without it.

Some of the replies in this thread have been incredible, some very accommodating and helpful others just big headed and likely to put off new players with unhelpful replies such as “Welcome to a game that actually takes skill and brains to play”

The OP brings up valid points that this is a unique game and some parts are not clearly defined or intuitive and represent what i would class as the sort of first impressions the majority of new players trying the game will feel and see.

PGI listen to this guys questions and try make it a lot easier for new players otherwise you will lose a lot more going forward.,
