So apparently we have no way of telling what's dropping with us until after final 10-9-...-0 we can start swinging our head around madly trying to catch a glimpse of every team-mate around before they are far off in the field.
And yet it seems that those most beautiful and most-in-spirit fights I got without a premade team - were those where we actually took pain to communicate with each other even though we were all oh-hello-how-are-you-doing mercs on the filed that probably won't see each other in a dozen iterations of drops.
Still we were playing a team game rather that damn PUG-where-the-hell's-that-atlas-when-we-need-im? Well we were trying...
I won't get into complicated topic of silent suicide scouts and even more sophisticated one of "integrated coms".
I would simply suggest to take as a good practice to write your mechtype (may be even with main weaponry type your build is around) during those 10 seconds when people start asking - "oook do we have a plan for this?"
Simply:

A: "x Mad CTF-2X here"
B: "x drunk jenner-f at your service"
C:..
D:...
E...
.
.
H: "oh boy what a team we have"
A: "Aight, here we go - two atlases stay together, ctfs will support you, cats staying home and rain fire from above, dragon and jenner - scout left right centre *** please"
B: "Aight f*** it, I'm in! Lerooooooooooooooy Jeeeeenkins!"

P.S. Yes I am trying to imitate eve-goon-fleet-chat mess of early 2009...

If you press and hold Q, you can see the Chassis, Variant, and Armor % information for everyone in your line of sight, including teammates.

Indeed, I would absolutely love a way to see what allies are loaded out with as well. If I see a K2, there is no way for me to know if it is stock or a gaussapult, for example. While we are at it, let us configure weapon groupings at or before countdown.

Well, I am not suggesting any in-game mechanics, only common sense brief communication.

Me just use Q.
& assume that everyone else on the team be a useless LRM boat stricken by ECM if they stay back/don't follow/rush out to suicide/etc or a decent pilot/brawler if they follow.

It be effective 100% of the time so far.
Hence me high win/lose & k/d rate as a mainly pub dropper.

Edit: the siggy be from closed beta.
It be significantly higher now since release.

I use AutoHotkey for this. I have my loadout bound to a key, so it's easy to broadcast at the start of the match;

"Fat, ponderous LRM boat checking in. Boy I hope they don't have ECM!"

or

"Streak cat checking in, loaded with cheese and ready to make people scream in frustration. Also, I have no skill and ******** animals. Boy I hope they don't have ECM!"
