If you press the chat button, type some text, and then the last character you type before hitting "enter" is also a hotkey, both the chat message will appear, and the hotkey will take effect, provided that you pressed the hotkey a short amount of time before you press enter.

For example:

You're getting owned by 4 Atlases in your Raven. You quickly type "help" to your team, and press enter right after typing the "p", your mech shuts down and you die.

This happened to me today.
