I love the game, but that is not enough. I have seven friends who tried MWO, all of us over 40 with 10-20 hrs/ wk to game (jobs and kids). They are not the Mechwarrior franchise fan I am, table top etc.. They like the graphics and premise of the game but refuse to become vested in the game at this point. The reasons were:
1. Long term success depends on how 'new user friendly' the game is to the new customer taking a casual look at a new game before deciding to stay. MWO, to them, failed this big time.
Their #1 reason was current match making, typically they had 1 or 2 'good' games out of 10. Most games were a stomp, losing 8-1 or 8-0 with the very rare game ending 5-8 or better win or lose. New players do not want to 'pay their dues' and subject themselves to hours of degradation to eventually have fun in a game. At this point they see MWO as a small niche game due to the very poor new player experience- 10 roflstomps per maybe 1 win or fun game.
The next patch will do nothing to fix current mm problems, it will give some true 8 mans a nice venue. 4 man teams will still be stacked on one team first and the imbalance will continue as it is now. However, it will be interesting to see how many of these 8 mans stay if they are not winning or decide to synch drop into the current system for more easy wins.
2. Poor hit detection, 3. no way to deal with light mechs for a new player(no knock down mechanic and poor hit box), 4. Black screen on scenario start, 5. weapon imbalance- streak cats drove them nuts.
I love this game, but for it to thrive and grow, others have to love it- new players especially have to find it worthwhile to stay and play. Players can overlook some issues if they are having fun. New players are getting a bad taste currently and I imagine are opting to leave. All of the issues are exacerbated by the horrible/ sloppy match making system currently in place.
