are there any layouts of hitbox locations? especially heads; none are supposed to be more than 18, so an accurate alpha on a still mech at a still mech (neither moving) is completely recorded... but don't seem to be. trapped and legged, hit a cat twice in what used to gbe the head with a full 22, but nothing went to head. have had the same trouble with hunchies and awesomes.
any links or ideas?

Mostly it's aim for the windshield. I always forget which one of the eyes on the Atlas is the cockpit though.
That's why the Cataphract was so easy to kill for some time after its release. It is now fixed to just the center pane. Also for the lights the hitbox is usually a bit bigger than you'd expect. Afair for the Commando it's about the entire head.

The left eye of the Atlas is the cockpit. If you're both facing each other, you'd shoot for the eye on your right.

Is there any place where we can see full rendered models with the hitboxes colored for each mech?

There used to be one in the closed beta forums. Perhaps you can PM a mod to fish it out and have it stickied here? It seems like a good resource for the newbies.
