You don't have to have even numbers, as long as the teams have even weight. This allows greater than 4 and less than 8 to drop in groups. You could even open it up to combine four man groups.

Numbers will always be an advantage, so the short groups would bulk up, and the full groups might drop down in weight. Using this method, it would be possible for 8 medium and lights to face off against 5-6 medium, heavy and assaults

Matches would still be fair. Undermanned groups would still have an advantage against groups of greater numbers. Weight is the easiest and most accurate equation for balance in battle tech, and has been for decades.



Another option is a checkbox, for open group matching. Say you have a group of six people. You check the box to allow for matching with a group of two. They have the same checkbox , allowing for joining larger groups or pubs only. This way you always get eight man groups, but they might be mixes of groups wanting to fight as part of a larger team.
