If I remember correctly, most mech items have 10 hit points, except the engine, which have 15.

My concern here is: When you take damage to your center torso internals, and you get a critical, it is extremely likely this critical will damage your engine.

The torso of a 65 ton mech has 21 internal armor. That means, even if the crit damage is not multiplied by 2 or 3, the engine has less hit points than internal armor.

That to me suggests that most mechs will die faster from an engine destruction than from losing all internal hit points in their center torso, and thus overall making them more fragile.

Is that the desired behavior?

The destruction of an engine is irrelevant right now. I`ve stopped repairing engines like i stopped paying for ammo.
Let`s wait untill some kind of penalties are introduced. I played MW2 Mercenaries recently and took 2 critical hits into the engine which slowed me down to a crawl and made me overheat. MWO need stuff like that.
