I would love to see this game on steam. I know they take a cut, but I have to assume the exposure for the game would offset it.

True story, I only learned MWO EXISTED after reading that tutorial article on the PAReport. Keep in mind, I pretty much live on a video game blog and burn any down time at work checking out gaming news sites. MWO needs exposure and it needs it badly. This game is too cool to let it wallow in obscurity.

oh man.... getting this thing out to the actual public now would mean suicide for PGI. The game doesn't even come close to other F2P titles (yet).... i would not want this game to get anymore exposure till they hire more competent coders.

It is my opinion that Steam is the single greatest thing to happen to PC gaming since... well... ever.

It's the PC gaming equivalent of Jimmy John's sandwich delivery, the best sandwich related invention since the invention of the sandwich.

With the way this game is going you may as well put it on Steam. Piranha is shooting lots of torpedo's at their own product and dooming it to not to succeed well enough to avoid being on the safer, torpedo resistant, Steam boat. The direction this game should be getting taken, it isn't, thus it won't thrive like it could have, thus it will eventually end up on Steam like all the other "could have been great but weren't" products. They're very obviously more content with selling MC now rather than making a better product, which will accomplish the exact opposite.

Didn't they already say that they didn't want this game on steam?

They also said the game will never get third person view as it breaks a pillar of the game and look where we are now.

Obviously their priorities are constantly changing and we cant take anything said more than 30 days ago at face value, so perhaps they will think looking into steam now is a good idea who knows.

Honestly i think the game could use any help it can get so going onto steam would be a good idea as this will for sure bring more players into the game, weather or not thats a good thing with the game in its current state i guess is debatable.

Greenlight doesn't require you to have a finished product and doesn't prevent people from publishers from submitting.

But yeah, wondering if increased sales would counter the money Value would take from each MC buy...

When the game is in the later stages of open beta or in a final build, it would be extremely foolish for PGI to not get hooked up w/ steam. There are already many other F2P games on Steam, it's a huge publicity boost too.

I can't agree more. I actually learned about and followed MWO's pre-announcement on 4chan, and then did further research from there. I'm a huge MechWarrior/BattleTech fan, most people are not. A more public and often seen channel is needed. LIKE STEAM!

What stage the game is in is totally irrelevant to whether it should be on Steam or not. Also, wanting your game to be in a crowd of failures rather than succeed on its own probably isn't the right mindset to have.

Steam takes 30% of all sales, so it would only make sense to release a game on steam if you knew it would generate enough additional revenue to offset their cut....

So how does this work with a F2P game? 30% of 0 = 0.

This game wouldn't get enough votes on Greenlight, they'd have to get Steam to just put it on through the standard channels. They don't want to do Steam because they don't want to give Steam a cut. (Personally once the game "launches" or whatever and it's good enough for new players to stick around I think Steam will be a huge asset).

Steam would get a 30% cut on the actual Software Sales. Seeing as MWO is a Free To Play game, there is no way to sell it on Steam without giving Steam a direct cut of the fictional currency purchases. There is a very select amount of people who will actually pay to fund the game. MWO is going to have a rough run of it if they give ANY of their profits away.

70% of ten times the current revenue beats 100% of the current revenue.

For now I don't think Steam is anywhere on PGI's radar. They did tell us that they ran a study and determined that the 30% cut would not be sufficiently offset by exposure to a wider market via Steam. I would not be too terribly surprised if PGI reconsiders eventually, but I seriously doubt they'll even take a second look until Open Beta is drawing to a close and full Launch approaches. Only then will there be much chance that PGI will reevaluate Steam.

It does matter IMO. Steam users are a very fickle bunch since they are used to buying relatively new AAA titles for between $5 and $30 during sales. The discussions for this game in this state in the game hub would make this forum look like it was fanboy heaven. Regarding the 30% sales grab, they could do a starter package on steam and then once people are playing the game they would be more likely to buy MC directly though PGI. Of my 50 friends on Steam only one plays this game, and barely at that. Most young folks haven't even heard of the MW franchise.

I know right.

Also this whole computer thing that I have to turn on when I want to play my games, and then I also have to pay the electricity company to make my computer work. DRM man... all these systems trying to control us.

*sarcasm off*

Seriously, Steam is the best thing to happen to PC gaming since PC gaming. Steam unlike every single one of its competitors makes itself worth my time.

Steam has saved PC gaming, whether you like it or not the PC space would be DEAD without Steam right now. Brick & Mortar for PC games has been dead for a long time...

No... steam replaced brick and mortar. There is no real evidence that steam, in any way saved anything. For me it looks more like it may be in parts responsible for killing the local game stores.

Some people. Very few. A tiny minority of PC gamers who are in the steam demographic do not use steam. I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of PC gamers use steam.

How many total accounts does steam have right now? 50 million? I bet, that this is nothing compared to the numbers of world wide computer players.

Steam may be convinient, but it is not in the best interest of the gamers.

Why I don't like steam:
- A purchase on steam doesn't actualy make you the owner of a copy of the game.
- Steam is additional software running on my rig, that I don't need to actualy play a game.
- DRM as an effective protection against software piracy is a myth. Steam is by desings a not needed DRM system.
- If steam closes shop, all money invested there is gone for good. Believing that steam is here to stay is shortsighted.
- Fanboys turn me away from a product, as they are never arguing rationally.
- Steam users are obviously unable to use the forum search function. Or why else is it, that we need a new thread about it every week?

Saved me, without Steam, I would be stuck with a PS3 and XBox by now.

Who cares, I never got back to an old game after I played it once.

I bet you also run TeamSpeak which is also not needed, and a browser, which is not needed too, and torrent client which is not needed. You got the point.

I'm pretty sure Steam is not about DRM.

Yeh, a friend of a friend of a friend of mine told me they're broke, those autumn sales are all a desperation move.

And so the Battletech and Mechwarrior fans, cause everyday we have a new thread about DHS, gausscats, streaks, screen bugs, crashes, MCs, unbalance, low FPS, UAC5, premades, PUGs, matchmaking, lag, and so on.

:) ;)

The only reason I bought a game on steam was because I needed to chat with a friend that didn't use any other messenger.

I hate Steam and will only use it if forced to do so.

But Steam will be good for a free to pay game because of Steams huge and mindless user base.
IF the game have basic functions like solid netcode, stability and matchmaker working well.

If those basic functions are not okay, then the game will fail and die fast because when
the game is on steam you can no longer hide population numbers. Population numbers matters.

It is possible to do as Tribes Ascend did and give both steam and non-steam option. Population numbers will still burn you if the game is in Alpha state.

I don't think this game is ready for Steam at all. Need a more complete version for that and
ofc EU servers.

Steam peaks at 6,000,000 concurrent users each day.

to get that kind of sustained user base you need in excess of a hundred million accounts. As most people work the majority of a day and only have time to game for an hour or two a night if that.

If you think putting this game on steam wouldn't massively improve their revenue stream (Assuming they got it onto steam when it is in a much more stable state) then you are crazy.
