I had a look at some of the more recent topics/posts about people hating 3rd person view, and I'd like to know why. Why does the vast majority of this very vocal forum community hate 3rd person?

I can see why some would hate to use it (immersion, perspective, preference, etc) but I cannot see why they want to keep it out of the game as an option. Does anyone believe third person gives some benefit over first person?

Edit: Found my answer, now looking for solutions to the increased awareness problem.

Short answer - one of the major draws to MW is the way it feels like a simulator. 3rd person mode takes away from the sim feel, but gives a tactical advantage. People don't want to make the game less enjoyable in order to play at max effectiveness.

Personally I wouldn't like 3rd person to become a thing for normal game-play but I think a special game mode where every player uses it could be fun for a change.

Here is the EXACT reason why

This video is old, but showcases a relatively new player to the online experience going in with a Timberwolf Prime. Not a bad mech but notice something...

...at about 1 minute in, you start noticing mechs flying over the hills taking shots at the new guy and his team mates. Why? Because they are using 3rd person to see over the hill while their mech is remained completely hidden.

3rd person grants players ridiculous advantages that players who prefer 1st cannot compete with, therefore making it the norm and standard to use 3rd. And once everyone uses 3rd, instantly the game loses all feelings of simulation and it goes downhill from there.

Okay, now I get it.

Is there any way to remove that tactical advantage and keep 3rd person?

It had been discussed that if you can't see a mech in first person then it would not be visible in 3rd person either. It would just "appear" when you rounded the corner or crested the hill and saw it.

This and the very idea of 3rd person drew so much ire that I received hate mail and a threat just for so much as suggesting that maybe MWO should try to keep its audience a little wider.

There's some talk of having 3rd person only allow you to see thing in line-of-sight (so you will be able to look down a hill but enemy mechs will blink in to existence only when they would be visible to your first-person view) but the extra situational awareness of 3rd-person would likely still make it superior or at least have a lower skill-cap.

The only way I can see would be a game-mode where everyone is in 3rd person that is less rewarding in C-Bills and XP. I briefly played MW2 (I quit because I didn't enjoy sucking in that game) and it had a mode called third-person tactical. It wasn't as popular as the normal modes but it was fun to play occasionally.

See above or just read it here:

Only play 3rd vs 3rd and 1st vs 1st.

How about increased accuracy or better sensors for First person to counterbalance the ability to see more when in 3rd?
Then make sure you cant change camera mid match to reap benefits at will...
