Hey. Just wondering people's opinions on mech maneuverability preferences.

Do you like mechs that just have a very high top speed? ex. the Locust (8/12/0)
or
Do you prefer a lower speed but with jump jets? ex. the Stinger (6/9/6)

While obviously terrain makes a difference, let's say just in general. Like, if you had to buy only 1 that you would use on many different missions, which would you prefer?

I prefer a moderate landspeed, 65-70KpH with lots of armor and a few decent weapons. That is my Heavy...My assaults, well, Speed just goes out the window....If I can get 60 I call it good, I pack on the armor then toss on weapons....JJ? Fast? Wut are those lol...

As a confirmed fan of the PXH-1 Phoenix Hawk I obviously prefer moderate-high speed and jumping ability. Sure, having the pure roadrunner eat-my-dust speed and acceleration of a Locust or a Cicada is nice and all, but a 6/9/6 mech like the Phoenix Hawk retains enough speed to be an excellent recon mech/harasser and adds the flexibility of being able to jump when you need it.

Of course, if speed is a must I say "Yes please, give me both" and pick an 8/12/8 Spider.

Depends on what I'm after and my role. I tend to prefer jump jets if at all possible, the versatility and maneuverability is just awesome. On something like a 4/6'er or slower though they don't serve as much purpose to me.

Losing jump ability would be crippling in the terrains of the released videos.

Also, if you need speed, you should be able to use jj's to scoot forward. MW2 certainly allowed it. I once built a jenner with maxed out jumpjets, and could easily outrun LRM's. Backwards. Can't remember if it went to 300 or 600 kph. either way, it was unhittable.

It probably will depend if you can jump backwards.

As Christoper Dayson says above, my answer would depend on the role/terrain - mostly the terrain.
Sometimes I'd want lower speed and the ability to jump.
Sometimes I'd want to be flying like a rocket.
Sometimes I'd prefer to trade speed for perhaps more armour or weapons - course that's probably a base mech version issue.

I choose not to vote in this binary poll.

I prefer high speed in general. If I'm moving at less than 90kph I feel slow. Once I hit the 90kph marker... jump jets are nice to have. I love my Jenner.

Speed is VERY important to me. There is a jump from 65kph (4/6) to 86kph (5/8) with engines, and that's a ~33% increase in speed. Sun Tzu said that speed and power were 2 key assets to victory, so for me, going any slower than 86 (even in a Heavy), would usually indicate that my Mech is designed for a defensive role (ie, guarding the base).

86kph lets you keep slower Assaults/Heavies/Mediums at range and tear them apart with long range weapons as long as you can. But because of the LRM limitation in not arming until 200m out, you also need to be packing weapons for when they get past your inner defenses so that you can still engage them.

People always thought jumping would make them harder to hit. ;)

The Mechs I like to play in TT all moved 5 / 8 / 5.
Are not available in game, and more than likely, will not be seen.

I prefer multi-role Mechs that are good at several things, but excel at none.

In TT, I favor the ability to jump out of trouble over raw speed. Once I get a chance to play MWO... ;)

I voted for high land speed. Give me a Cicada with a large laser that manages around 130KpH and i'll be satisfied. But add an ER large laser instead and that's all i need.
I just hope we can influence acceleration with a module or equipment. That's almost as important to me as the speed factor...almost that is.
