I like the ideaof ECM. You don't find electronic countermeasures in many modern games, and I think it's admirable that the MW:O devs would try to stick close to the battletech canon and introduce all of the little gadgets like Beagle, AMS and ECM. Unfortunately, this is not the type of game that will benefit from its implementation for three major reasons:
1. It is so effective that any team without it will suffer a major disadvantage. All matches are 8v8, so it is likely that at least one person will have ECM. However, any teams that happen to get stuck without it are sitting ducks. Because of this, everyone is going to be clamoring for a Mech with ECM, and it will basically become a mandatory piece of equipment, instead of a fun optional accessory.
2. Dealing with ECM will be frustrating and confusing to new players, People who play online shooters are probably accustomed to some form of radar, or having none at all. What nobody is accustomed to is having a radar that works "some of the time, depending on what your opponent has". I know what you're thinking: "Read the patch notes, noobs!". Well, newer players will quickly lose interest, regardless of any explanations for why they sometimes are unable to use their radar. MW:O started out as simple and easy-to-learn, which is definitely what you want in a FTP, but additions like this are quickly diluting that aspect of it, and the numbers will suffer.
3. ECM further increases the advantage of groups and teamspeak. If you are playing alone, you cannot necessarily rely on someone else having ECM, so you either have to buy it for yourself or pray to the mechgods that you get put in a team that has it AND knows how to use it. Furthermore, since the radar information will be unavailable, players who can communicate through teamspeak will have a HUGE advantage, even bigger than the one they already have. If you are going to introduce more game mechanics, don't balance it in favor of the people who are already winning. Now, I enjoyed playing both by myself and with my team(s), but since the ECM patch is out I won't even bother with the risk of pugging.
This game will soon turn into a few tight-knit groups of brawler mechs running the same old plays over and over as new and solo players get frustrated and leave. It's too bad- this game was a really cool concept for a quick and easy FTP and I think it would have gotten a big following and made a lot of money.
