TF2 does a thing where they sell you something, and then an additional tool which can apply decals to things that support it.

For example, your character can buy a button to wear, and then you can buy a decal tool that lets you upload a photo to display on the object.

Since cockpits are internal and are only visible to the player and spectators, this might be a neat idea (mounts for photos, etc)
