Trying to get a better idea of what kind of hardware we like to field. I'm seeing a lot of people in the Roll Call thread are noting that they prefer the lighter three quarters of mechs, with few showing any preference at all for Assaults. I'd like to get a better idea of where our preferences lie in terms of weight classes, which will help us determine where our strengths and weaknesses lie as a faction, and what kind of tactics and strategies to adopt and focus on.

Meh - I THINK I want a Scout/Light mech - Raven - but all of the weight classes have upsides and downsides.

Light - very fast and hard to hit - light on DPS (and armor but should be hard to hit...)

Med - good Mix of speed and DPS - but light on armor

Heavy - good mix of DPS with some armor - Slow

Assault - best mix of DPS with armor - Slower

Sound about right?

The problem is the way assaults are taking a beating from the haters no one will actually admit they want one :D

I prefer heavy and assault fire support roles, but will pilot anything depending on the mission type and unit requirements

Its no so much about the class, but the individual mechs in each class. Each class has good and bad designs, and personal taste plays a part to.

Assaults are just too freaking slow. Mediums beyond the Bushwacker and the Shadowcat I've never really enjoyed. Heavy's have firepower but can move slightly faster then tectonic plates, and Light mechs are just fun as hell to play!

Personally, I've always enjoyed running Lights in a stealth/reconnaissance role (I loved my Raven in Veng CTF), but my preferred modes of combat are driving a Heavy mech with a lot of direct firepower and a lot of speed, engaging as a skirmisher and mobile sniper (yes, I ran an ERPPC BK on NHUA servers in Mercs, but I squeezed 4 ERPPCs and an ERLL on with JJs, BAP and ECM and enough engine speed to go 96 KPH, swapping out most of my armor for tissue paper and an extra coat of paint), and pounding around in an Atlas, which I preferred because, despite being a slow 100-tonner, it was still fast enough to fill a heavy skirmishing role.

Never really cared much for the Mediums - didn't have quite enough speed and agility, nor quite enough armor and firepower.

It all depends what will be fielded. I suspect I'll have one of each weight class in my hanger, a Commando for the daring scout/harasser role with the punch and speed required to hit and run. A Centurion for a all round medium mech with enough weapons and armor to skirmish on the front lines. The Founders Catapult for fire support purposes and a fall back safety mech, but what I'll most likely be rolling around in is the direct fire support Awesome... the energy layout and punch mean I can lone wolf/hunt if required or provide some serious defensive firepower to cover base locations or team mates in peril.

The role and class of mech people choice will be based on playing preferences I'll wager, so whilst there might be a few Assualts on the field by Marik they might be the overlooked anchor point in future strategies. Use them as bait or at choke points on maps and you might be able to flush the enemy into ambushs. Or you might find that field a few long-range fire support variants like the Stalker and Awesome you'll have well defended bases that can decimate the enemy as they approach.

Personally I'll be excited to see how each mech is fielded and how successfully a player can learn to play a role on the battlefield to the mech's strengths.

Mediums - the working horse of Mech WARFARE!

Assault is just stomping forward and shooting. Not very much piloting skill and tactics needed.
