If you're a merc, and you are good to enough to beat other merc units in a battle for control of a border world, then you'll have world/s that you can call home. If you do that, then you'll see plenty of action defending those worrld/s from other mercs so I don't think you'll need to go out patrolling looking for trouble.

You could sorta do that in a match. Your defending team deploys first, and you must do a patrol of your bases. You do not know where, (or maybe not even when) the enemy team will arrive (maybe even an orbital drop). You'd have to patrol in order to both protect your bases, and scout out the enemy location when they arrive.

Hello and welcome to the forums!
Mechwarrior Online is focused on team based gameplay, and does not currently seem to have any "missions" per se. The game does have two different announced gameplay types, and I believe the developers are working on several others.
I agree that sandbox/open ended content would be great! However there has been no official announcement about supporting such a feature and I would not expect one in the forseeable future.
The game is currently slated for the open beta to be released sometime "Summer 2012"
Please checkout the FAQ and the New players start here thread for additional information.
Cheers

Hypothetically, if there were multiple spawn locations, there really isn't anything preventing you from sending one scout to run around everywhere like SC. It's more likely that the spawn locations will be fixed, anyway, so scouting would only be useful to determine the movements of enemies.
I suppose that would depend on the manner of the 'mission' design and such, though I agree the fast scouts would probably do the patrolling (unless you're Lyran). If the map was designed well, I think you'd need more than just a couple mechs scouting/patrolling around, cause unless you got lucky and found them right away, the enemy would slip by and take you unawares.
I think it would be neat to see an objective based map something like this added into the game one day. You could never do a RL style patrol, but something at least similar-ish would be fun.
