The reason is I have a spare 280 sitting around from another Cataphract and would like to load that one on.
Any ideas?

The 4X has a lower max engine that all other CTFs.
check out Smurfy for engine ratings per variant: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

For heavy Mechs, the maximum engine rating is 1.2x the stock engine rating rounded up to the nearest multiple of 5

If, however, you are asking about the 4X, then the answer is that provided by the various other posters regarding the stock engine determining the range of up- and down-grades you can put in it.
I do recommend putting a 250 in, since that's the most efficient way to save weight and space on heat sinks while bumping up the speed a bit.

If you go with an XL then do the 255XL, weighs the same as a 250XL but gives a little more speed. ANd the 4X needs as much speed as it can get. Even with the 255 I find it too slow to enjoy playing.
