And the show died, primarily, because Fox ran it out of order at changing times and constantly pre-empted it with baseball, then wondered why it didn't get the numbers to justify the cost.
I have a number of VHS tapes, still, that say "Firefly" on them, and have baseball games, or entirely different shows.
In today's world, with DVRs, it might have a better chance. As it stands, it's a shining, brilliant season that we can all love (because it's far too late to try to revive it) and miss.
I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me.

FOX doesn't care about what shows might make money. FOX cares about what shows ARE MAKING MONEY.
I love the show, and FOX did a lot (probably unintentionally) that ended up killing it, but there is no guarantee that it would have succeeded either way. The people who would have liked it mostly knew about it when it was on. Its DVD sales were relatively low, but convinced Whedon to make a movie; which also didn't sell terribly over costs.
I think FOX expected Firefly to be the instant success of Buffy and Angel, and it really wasn't because the audience didn't transfer. DIE HARD Whedon fans probably did, but the show was incredibly quirky. There were plenty of teenagers watching Buffy/Angel for the 'dreamy vampires' and not Whedon's writing.
Once the show failed to turn a profit, FOX did it's other signature move: refuse to sell the rights so no one else could do anything with it. Given the length of time between the show and movie, and the relatively low sales of the movie; the age of the project effectively killed the potential for sequels.
I would have loved to have seen more than one season, but sometimes things don't work out. Damned shame, but at least Nathan Fillion is on Castle and has Firefly cast on from time to time.

Fox is dumb for cancelling Firefly AND Space: Above and Beyond.

Fox cancelled quite a few shows that year. Futurama (more 2003 but cancellation was announced 2002) , Family Guy, and of course, Firefly. Most of the shows killed off that season were not of note, however, these three alone represented millions in potential revenue that would only be realized several years later. Of course, Family Guy has brought in more money than Fox knows what to do with, Futurama managed to eke out another season...but Fox remains mysteriously silent on the rights to Firefly. Nathon Fillion actually approached Fox with the idea of buying the rights, and was rudely rebuffed, even after so much time. Will we ever see Serenity fly again?
Possibly. The Science channel isn't talking, since they presently have the broadcast rights. So it's hard to know.
I'd like to think it'll happen.
But the one thing that struck me as odd with the "reunion." Ron Glass (Shepherd Book) was strangely absent. And he was the one that said that all it would take is a phone call from Joss and he'd come running.
