So what is a Jomsviking?
The
Jomsvikings were a legendary company of Norse mercenaries of the 10th century and 11th century. They would fight for any lord able to pay their substantial fees and were known for their ferocity in battle. Their stronghold Jomsborg (Jom's Fort) was located on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, but the exact location is disputed by modern historians and archeologists.
The
Saga of the Jomsvikings relates that the Jomsvikings were highly selective in deciding whom to admit to their order. Prospective members were required to prove themselves with a feat of strength, often taking the form duel. Once admitted, the Jomsvikings required adherence to a strict code of conduct in order to instill a sense of discipline among its members. Any violation of these rules could be punished with immediate expulsion from the order. Each Jomsviking was bound to defend his brothers, as well as to avenge their deaths if necessary. He was forbidden to speak ill of his fellows or to quarrel with them.
Perhaps the most famous of all Jomsvikings was Harald Bluetooth (so named from his addiction to blueberries which stained his teeth blue) for which our modern "Bluetooth" technology is named for.
MWO:
Our unit was originally special forces loyal to the Lyran Commonwealth, created by the Steiner royals as an elite group for covert planet drops and "removal" of enemy objectives. Soon the bloated military politics of the Commonwealth stopped funding for the
Jomsviking Project. The commanders of the unit retired and asked permission from the Archon to act independently as a mercenary company. This request has been granted and the mercenary company has been formed.
