Not fully tested yet due its sporadic occurence.
Randomly, a single strike or volley of ballistic shot will cause instant death on a near fully/fully armoured mech.
Examples so far: Cataphract 4x- Some damage (amber on 2-3 sections armour, no internal damage).
Had been hit by only a few shots prior to death so I'm pretty sure the damage reporting was correct at that time.
Received hit from cataphract (unknown type) with what seemed 2 gauss. Instantly died. Not a cockpit hit as I could see it strike to the left side of my mech torso.
After battle damage detail showed lowest section at 58% (left torso). Not running XL engine. Dual gauss fitted (no explosive ammo), No limbs lost in brief post-death visual.
Similiar occurences in Catapult A1 and Atlas (atlas had been completely undamaged prior to sudden death occurence).

My first guess would be your Gauss rifles detonated. They do 20 damage each when they detonate.
Gauss rifles are a special case because their ammo is inert.
There are also critical hits in the game which can cause this to happen.
Next time it happens please take a screenshot when you die so we can see the paper doll and take it to support.
But I don't see how it could have happened on an A1 unless your ammo blew up.

I've heard rumors of Mechlab forgetting mechs had armor, dying to single volleys of incoming fire and the like, even those that had no ammo/only AMS, standard engines etc. This sort of effect has happened to my team too.

I have not seen that bug in several patches. Not saying it is not possible, but if it occured, he would have seen red internals or armor

I got 1shotted by dual AC10s to the CT of my jenner. Had 27 armor... Is damage still transferring through armor?

Gauss detonation is unlikely as they are in the arms of my 4x. Both arms were still intact and Gauss explosions usually rip them off.

Will try to, but there is still an issue with paperdolls not updating at death.
The A1 went down with a single volley impacting left missile rack (left arm),,,,there was no ammo in that section (way too easy for folks to target). However, Thinking about it I did have a Heatsink up there as I did in the Left and Right Torso of my Cataphract. Are heatsinks exploding again?
