you cannot "skip" them even if you unlocked master skills.

Yeah. But from the looks of it the Stalker is just inferior to the Awesome-9M in most ways. Mainly because the Stalker wont be able to use all its weapon hardpoints efficiently without true double heatsinks.
Yeah I don't play what's the best - I play for what interests me so I'll probably go for it anyway.

I've been misinformed by players before, but then again I've been misinformed by the game too, so... I guess I'll see for myself if I ever start playing MWO again.

You need basicx3 on the same chassis type to unlock elite.
You need elitex3 on the same *weight class* to unlock master.
So to get Master on a Stalker, you need 3 stalkers with basics maxed, and that stalker + 2 other assaults to have elites maxed. Those assaults can be Stalker, Atlas, or Awesomes.
That's how I read it anyhow. I haven't tested for certainty.

But if you want to reach the master perk in a specific variant of a specific light mech, you will still have to unlock all basic efficiencies for at least 3 variants of that light mech.

If that's true, then the game does lie. It says I unlock master if I Elite any three chassis in a weight class, and that's not true; it's just *one* of the conditions required.
After unlocking basic efficiencies for six mechs and reaching a point where I can't reasonably make any more C-bills, it's clear that I'll never Elite another mech ever again, much less Master. Not that I could afford any Modules anyway.
On a completely unrelated matter... Brittany, eh? I was thinking of taking a vacation there next year. Must be fantastic to live there.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how the pilot skills work then.
If I get to master in 3 atlas mechs and I buy one awesome I will be able to get to master pilot skill level without buying another awesome?
No, not for 'Elite'.
But works for 'Master'.
