You do what damage your weapon does. Know your weapons.
1 hit with an AC/20? 20 damage.
1 full-length hit with a medium laser? 5 damage.
1 SRM? 2.5 damage. 6 of 'em? *counts on fingers* 15!
So a full alpha of 1 AC/10, 2 SRM-6, and 2 ML is 10 + 30 + 10 = 50 damage.
There's absolutely no way having floating damage numbers is a good idea.

Awww stjobe you cut off the rest of the post where I said it's unnecessary and that I would be happy we just got the option to change the damage graph to a bar graph.

I did do that, no offence intended. Your post was just perfectly worded to use as a springboard into mine
I'd also like a bra graph, incidentally

How about you send off a volley of 80 LRM's how many hit, how many did ams destroy, how many hit the landscape, did some crit and others not? There is alot of information to sort through if there is a scrolling record of damage. One shiny number saying my 8 medium lasers did 35 distributed damage that was only visible to me in my heads up display isn't too much to ask.

You know roughly how much damage your weapons do by looking at the paperdoll in the upper right corner. If there's armour left on the enemy you haven't done enough damage yet. Keep firing. If there's a line of text in the upper left corner saying "DoRkcHoPs has killed stjobe" you have done enough damage and can stop firing.
That's all the information you really need, there's no tactical advantage to knowing you scratched the paint of an Atlas at 986 meters, or that the Centurion you're firing on has taken 16.4 damage to its left arm. Look at the paper doll, fire at the weak parts until he's dead.
