Hawken looks like the ticket.. I don't care what I play, as long as it scratches the gaming itch. :)

You are not alone. Its the pvp itch that needs some scratching. Planes, tanks, battleboats, death stars or
mehcs. Doest not really matter as long as its not the overdone men on foot with rifles.

Mehcs are really fun tho, especially with the complex damage system. It was the same with WoT and tanks.
adding a ding factor and a choice where to hit besides the nobrainer "head-shot" really enriches a shoot them up game.

I wonder how the damage model in Hawken is? That is what will decide if its worth spending any time on it at all.

That's one of the reasons Hawken doesn't interest me much, even though I am willing to believe it is a good system.
I do not believe, however, it is a reason that Mechwarrior would necessarily be less succesful. Just like I don't think heat is a problem. People are familar with mana cost for spells and ammo cost as well, after all, and going by all those fantasy MMOs, it's popular.

I'm gonna get called a troll (again) but have any of you looked at PGI's track record?

Expecting this game to be GOTY quality would be like expecting Jack Black to win an Oscar or the Detroit Lions to come within swinging range of a super bowl.

I have high hopes for this game and enjoy it, but what were any of you expecting?

I could enjoy this game a lot more just by a single thing: Better game balance. I know it's also lacking in net code, stability, depth of gameplay. But this single thing bothers me the most (followed closely by net code), and I do not believe you need an AAA studio to make a decently balanced Mechwarrior game. I am not saying perfectly balanced. Just decent. Many games have incredibly complex weapon and ability mechanics, they have healing abilties, area effects, buffs and debuffs. Battletech is simplistic by comparison, it is much more open to mathematical analysis, there are considerably less mechanical interdependencies.
If I tried to balance, say Startrek Online, I wouldn't know where to start, that game is a terrible mess of complex mechanics and interdependences, and I can almost* excuse that Cryptic doesn't know how to do it, either.
But Battletech? There are just different flavors of guns. No healing. No area effect. No buffs or debuffs.

*) Almost, but not really. They get paid the big bucks. ANd there is no reason to make things worse with every major upgrade and every Pay-To-Win console...

I got no idea about the damage model, I only just registered after seeing a post on this read about it.. I agree with your post about how awards don't necessarily mean anything and the gaming industry is corrupt.. But hey, the whole world is corrupt now :)
I had a squizz on their forums and it seems their closed Beta peeps are happy and excited about the game, that's a good sign.

I had hoped MWO would turn out well, but since july to now, I must say I've lost faith they can even remotely deliver what was promised, and in their set time frame. 6 months of broken netcode doesn't exactly inspire comfidence either.

Will be interesting to check out their damage systems, mechs, etc today.. Dunno why people get so fanatical anbut a game, play whatever tickles at the time, and it's a game... Where does loyalty come into picking a fun game to play lol :(

  • Hawken has NO right to be there. Barely anyone has played it, jsut getting into open beta now. Claiming a game in closed beta to be one of the best games of the year is very unprofessional.
  • Dota 2 is a far more mature Beta than MWO
  • It's that guy's personal opinion. To say that a company is failing because it's not on one random *****'s GOTY list is tantamount to claiming that 99% of games are absolute failures, because they're not on that list. That list does contain some games I enjoyed immensely this year, but many more that I and many others enjoyed just as much are absent. Your comment is sensationalist.

Honestly, I can't honestly see how people can say that hawken and mechwarrior: online are identicle or offer the same things. Mechwarrior: online is what people call a "thinking mans" shooter. It rewards tactics, teamwork, skills and less so reaction time. Hawken is a very fast paced twitch shooter. Both offer good things to there respective target audience. But if you can jump from MWO to Hawken and enjoy it more. Then you never really had any interest in a thinking mans shooter or mechwarrior to begin with. If you want a battletech game like hawken, then mechassault is as close as you can get.

Happy players is a good sign. No doubt about that, but its free to pay so gotta test it and see. These days all game have some fanatical white-knights that would "defend" their game even if it feed them warm turds as lunch.

I really hope the devs get back on track with this game though. It is so promising, just need some right choices done and with that I DON'T mean 3rd person view.

Unfair matching that scares away new players is pure madness. Even in beta. Beta is for testing stuff and I am sure they have all the feedback they need about the matchmaking and other issues.

Edit; haha this got moved to OFF TOPIC DISCUSSIONS Guild wars 2 style forum control is sexy.

Well I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, this founder has for the time being given up on MWO. I am hoping that PGI will see the drop in numbers and perhaps reconsider some of the choices they made. Because frankly until they do I doubt very much I'll be back.

Meantime I'm very much enjoying the Firefall Beta. If you can imagine a cross between Heinlein's original "Starship Troopers" (not the movie they screwed that totally) with a strong touch of Tribes and a healthy dash of WoW.

Open Beta was to soon with not enough features. Graphik engine was a mess. Important features not testet etc

Hawken is probably a better game than MWO but is more a Egoshooter mod with mechs then a true Mechagame.

Thats why I like MWO. It's different. I hope MWO will be long enough around to get matchmaking and community warfare right :-)

@Hawken: Having played both, while Hawken is absurdly more polished than MWO in terms of the netcode, user interface, and optimization, the game play didn't really keep me interested beyond an hour or two. It's a very simplistic game, and the earlier comparisons to Call of Duty with mechs isn't too far from the truth

@PCGamer: The fact that they didn't nominate Mechwarrior Online for anything despite being in open beta for a month speaks volumes about how prevalent the game is in the minds of the media. It doesn't say much about the gameplay; several of the games on that list offer objectively mediocre gameplay yet are raised up as paragons of their genre. If Mass Effect 3 wins RPG of the year I might just cry.

MW:O is not yet ready for any nomitations, it is still under development, and they are still working on base functionality (core networking, mechs and community warfare).
It is only a shame they went Open Beta, because now people are going to compare MWO with those other games.

Although comparing MWO:O as a game with Hawken or Planetside2 is plain stupid :-)

Hawken is a much more finished game than MWO.

You can hate the gameplay and the art direction, but from a purely technical standpoint it's a superior product.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they nailed one of the awards.

In the eyes of the greater public, MWO is dead before release.

Hawken Open Beta in 8 hours if anyone wanna try a real game and not a reboxed MW4 online scam
http://www.playhawken.com/

wow. I still think MWO is better though. At least in terms of depth but i guess thats more inherited from the IP than something PGI has done.

Oh they moved this to off topic doesn't seem like they can take criticism

Then again i guess if they could take criticize they wouldn't be where they are now.

Great book, move was something else but I found it entertaining (I like Sci-fi)
Tribes was fantastic and nothing has ever beaten it. I don't think I can take another Tribes Ascend abomination though.
But with WoW? Sounds like one hell of a mix.

Do you get to nuke aliens in Firefall? :P

This game gets completely pawned by so many of those on the list. We have 4 maps. 1 game mode and the simplest of objectives - grind. GL MWO for the future, the present looks just like the list, absent.

Huh? No, its just easier to procrastinate in college by going on a forum then being really obvious about it and playing a video game.

Again, why does logic take a back seat in everything in this god forsaken place?

how about im building a castle in minecraft instead of playing mwo.

its not balanced enough, does not have enough variety nor is it fun enough to stand on its own without any ingame ladder/merc corps/ANYTHING other than the single game mode on the same small maps.
i have over 500 games played (+ probably over a 1000 played before the open beta) and nothing to play towards. the game is more frustrating and unbalanced/glitchy than played out.

again... best strategy for the game atm is for people not to play it? And people wonder why there are "no new players" and "where are the new players at"
