That's one of the reasons Hawken doesn't interest me much, even though I am willing to believe it is a good system.
I do not believe, however, it is a reason that Mechwarrior would necessarily be less succesful. Just like I don't think heat is a problem. People are familar with mana cost for spells and ammo cost as well, after all, and going by all those fantasy MMOs, it's popular.

I'm gonna get called a troll (again) but have any of you looked at PGI's track record?
Expecting this game to be GOTY quality would be like expecting Jack Black to win an Oscar or the Detroit Lions to come within swinging range of a super bowl.
I have high hopes for this game and enjoy it, but what were any of you expecting?
I could enjoy this game a lot more just by a single thing: Better game balance. I know it's also lacking in net code, stability, depth of gameplay. But this single thing bothers me the most (followed closely by net code), and I do not believe you need an AAA studio to make a decently balanced Mechwarrior game. I am not saying perfectly balanced. Just decent. Many games have incredibly complex weapon and ability mechanics, they have healing abilties, area effects, buffs and debuffs. Battletech is simplistic by comparison, it is much more open to mathematical analysis, there are considerably less mechanical interdependencies.
If I tried to balance, say Startrek Online, I wouldn't know where to start, that game is a terrible mess of complex mechanics and interdependences, and I can almost* excuse that Cryptic doesn't know how to do it, either.
But Battletech? There are just different flavors of guns. No healing. No area effect. No buffs or debuffs.
*) Almost, but not really. They get paid the big bucks. ANd there is no reason to make things worse with every major upgrade and every Pay-To-Win console...
