Ballistics can be fun and they are not useless, but again, if you want the edge stick to small, medium, large and their pulse laser cousins except for the large pulse.
actually the lasers {large one's} are fixed as well just that they last in fire long enough for you to track the target.

I use a centaurian with ac2-10, so I just trolled a few games and practices hitting rocks at 400m out while I was standing still. Then I practiced moving and hitting rocks. Then I ignored all other mechs and worked on hitting moving fatlases. So on and so on. After about 17 games I can tap a Jenner moving 4/5 of max speed right on the *** at 400m out. You just have to do it by trial and error. Don't give up its totally worth it!
Or...PGI can give us a map with moving targets so we can practice such things and getting through the 600 HP lag shields

they shoot in an X pattern, you will shoot around some people
All mechwarriors are cross eyed pilots.
convergence will make it into the game some year.
Basically this. I actually enjoy it quite a lot but I am the first to admit the convergence logic in this game is baffling. I just learn to lead. Like, a lot.

The best way currently to deal with this is the following..
Aim at the ground just in front of your targets line of movement.. Just as you hit the fire button raise teh aim point up.. The convergence will usually still be at the range of the ground y his feet when the guns actually fire.. t is sloppy but I have found it works more often then not.. Use the code in your favor.. The lights do.//
If you do this just right, you can just literally shoot the ground in front of lights and leg them, due to lag shooting

However, I noticed that I'm missing a *lot* with the Ilya - essentially, the ballistics are not flying where the circle reticle is indicating. It's not a case of lag compensation either - it looks like my shots are converging somewhere behind the target.
I suspect it's a problem with arm-mounted ballistics. What am I doing wrong, and how are you supposed to aim with them?
You have two targeting reticules the + and the o. The + is your torso aiming reticule, and the o is your arm aiming reticule. when the reticule turns red fire, you will hit what yoou are shoting at.

Well that to. But it is more fun putting a AC20 through their CT when they are moving at 100KPH+

Man, I wish I ran into more games where Ilyas weren't just pointing themselves at other mechs and letting the screwed up mechanics take over while they hold down autofire.

If it were easy, matches wouldn't last long enough.

Which would only serve to make you more terrible at this game... not saying you are terrible, but if you can't figure out arm / torso aiming, then you will be at a serious disadvantage to those who have in many cases.
Slaving your arms to your torso limits your ability to combat fast moving mechs or use precise aiming with arm mounted weapons.
