Alright, it's fun to make jokes about Lyran scout lances made of assault 'mechs. But just to be sure you guys realize it, the Lyran Commonwealth both produces and fields large numbers of light and medium 'mechs (heck, there is a 160 km/h 30 ton with TAG and ECM coming out of Coventry in few years). They make greater use of heavies and assaults than the other states (assaults especially are rare elsewhere, perhaps less than 10% of total force) but it's does not make exclusive use of assaults nor are they even anything close to majority. They primarily rely on lights and mediums to carry out raiding and preliminary scouting, just like everyone else. Recon in force can be different, but that applies to everyone else too.
There, I said it. I won't do it again, and sorry for being a spoilsport.

That's true too. The LCAF 'mech jocks do dismiss lighter 'mechs traditionally. Light 'mechs seem to be often funneled into militia forces, even at expense of having to use heavier if more outdated machines. There doesn't seem to be much audacious "Hussar attitude" in LCAF that you can find elsewhere.
But they still use lights and meds, even if many traditionally minded pilots (especially in elite units) cringe at the prospect. They have less of them and are generally less effective at using them than other states, but they are still there. In the original fluff, it's also specifically heavy 'mechs, not assaults, that they are really heavy on.

Just to clarify, any good Lyran knows all about the proper classification of Mechs.
20-35 tons: Battle Armor
40-55 tons: Light Mech
60-75 tons: Medium Mech
80-100 tons: Heavy Mech
Honestly, I don't know what these "Assault Mechs" are supposed to be. I've never heard of them.

You're still giving too much credence to lighter mechs with that.

I don't know a single respectable commander who would use a single lance of Atlases for recon. 2 at the very least, preferably 5 or 10.

I am no lore specialist, but using battle armors seems rather logical for the Steiner. If you need speed and agility, you simply don't bring mechs and stick to something smaller than a barn that can be executed by two well palced volleys. If it is firepower you need, you simply take what does provide any, and heavies do that quite well.
