I've been looking through Sarna for quite a while now, but I still don't understand something. Multiple different mechs are equipped with a weapon known as a Plasma Rifle, and it seems to be quite well-known in the universe, yet every MW game so far has avoided it. Can someone fill me in?

Year Availability: 3068

That's after the Federated Commonwealth civil war. No game reached that year.

Possibly because it's not available til 3068. Have any other games taken place that far along the timeline?

Are you sure? I vaguely remember using some kind of aerial, (flying,) mech that was able to use some sort of plasma cannon... I can't remember which game it was but I am sure it was in the Mechwarrior series...

It was an uber weapon.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries takes place 3066-3067 That's the farthest any game went in the timeline. One year short of the plasma rifle.

In case you don't know, right now in MWO it's December 3049, and the timeline will be moving forward at a 1:1 scale. In other words, every day that passes IRL passes in-game.

Yep, 19 years (RL) to go for the plasma rifle. ;)

Your're right... I didn't think about the mechpacks. they included a plasma cannon in one of them. Of course they also had the beam laser, that sticks with your target no mater how it moves. ;)

You're thinking of the Razor-class "air skimmer" from EarthSiege II. B)
Frustratingly, it seems that the only picture of it on the entire Internet is one person's sketch of a LAM version. <_<

Imagine that without the legs, and that's exactly what the Razor looks like.

In-game, one could mount twin Plasma Cannons on the wingtips, and one-shot anything on a fly-by...

I think they've stated they may "bring forward" the timeline or suspend it as needed since im not sure the proper timeline is a steady stream of new stuff.

I remember having seen a 3050 mech with a Plasma Rifle in MegaMek, but I am not sure that's a canon design.

It seems to be in power similar to a PPC, a bit lighter, same heat, consumes ammo, and transfers heat to the target. Does seem a bit undepowered...

We should not talk about that. Let it be forgotten.

That would not be canon in 3050.

Wait 'till you see what it does to infantry, vehicles, and battle armor...

I see. Vehicles and INfantry never really mattered much in the Mechwarrior titles I played. Except perhaps Crescent Hawk's REvenge, I remember some rather hard battles with Rommel Tanks or something like that... Man that game was tough.
