I tried Hawken. It's a fun game, fun enough for me to put 20$ into it, but I still come back to MWO. The design philosophy is extremely different and while it feels like you're in a mech when you walk, the rest isn't very "mecha". These mechs in Hawken are actually a poor man's Gundam. It's cool, but I can't say it's better in terms of gameplay
In terms of polish though, they're a decade (exaggerating) ahead of MWO. Their interface is simply 10x better (PGI needs to completely revamp their game browser) and yes, there are more gamemodes, their Garage (mech lab) is also much more polished. It just shows how soon PGI launched MWO. I mean, MWO has potential, but there are a few key elements that need a lot of refinement (again, talking about game browser). Graphic wise, both are good, but their style are very different. I prefer MWO because of how damage a mech can look at the end of a round, but hawken runs smoother (with perhaps better graphics).
Gameplay wise, completely different games and it's now a matter of taste. Kids will probably prefer Hawken, but MWO's gameplay is potentially much deeper. PGI simply needs to stop cutting corners (referencing to the incoming Conquest game mode which is simply assault with 5 bases) and it can become the better game.
