Was the default FOV changed or has the cockpit size of the hunchback been changed (at the moment only piloting hunchbacks) things look different for some reason.

also, how does one join events like competitions and the twitch events?

You can change your FoV by editing the User.cfg (file found in the root MWO game folder) and typing cl_fov = 80

The competitions (leaderboard challenges) have an opt-in button in the tournaments page. click the button, and then participate during the specified time (and other rues such as certain mechs or other specifications)

The twitch events are not something you can sign up for. Garth Erlam and Phil "Sean Lang" play some broadcast games a few times a week. you could try joining the NGNG server and asking Phil if you can join his group, but that's going to be up to him.

If you want to join in the same match as the twitch.tv stream, that come down to timing and Elo bracket. If you have to ask, you're probably not in the same elo as Phil.

It's actually "Elo" and it's not an acronym, it's the guy's name who came up with the system. It's a rating system commonly used in 1v1 games like chess to rate a player's skill strength. Basically, you have a rating, your opponent has a rating, and based on how far those ratings are apart, you are each awarded or penalized a certain number of points if you win or lose the match, respectively.

If you beat a higher rated opponent, you gain a high number of points, but if you lose to the same opponent, you lose less points. Vice versa for a lower rated opponent. Make sense?

MWO currently uses a variant of this system for matchmaking.

Elo is not an acronym. Elo is a type of matchmaking metric. Better players will have a high Elo and poorer or newer players will have a lower elo. When you queue a match, the system tries to make the teams' Elo averages match.

This means if you hit Launch at the same time as Phil his Launch for his twitch.tv stream, you will probably not fall into the same match because his elo is (probably) much higher.

also of course, a broadcast stream is delayed by 2-5 seconds so you have to hit launch 2-5 seconds before he hits launch in the twitch.tv stream

80 as Redshift suggested creates a fish-eye look on some screens (like mine). So if you don't like how it looks, try 75. I found it to work well with mine, without causing the monitors on my cockpit to 'bend' and curve unnaturally.
