Not sure what happened since I was gone, but the game is now 100% unplayable for me.
Left my settings alone since 11 patches ago, and it was running at 20-30 fps on High settings. I had some issues with the occasional 4 fps bug, but other than that, I only left since my clan wasn't playing with the 4-man groups.
- 1st drop after patch: crash to desktop
- 2nd drop: 5-8 fps, while staring at the ground in front of me, on HIGH
- restarted client
- 3rd drop: 5-8 fps on HIGH
- 4th drop: 5-8 fps on HIGH
- restarted client
- 5th drop: 5-8 fps on HIGH
- reinstalled entire game
- 6th drop: 5-8 fps on HIGH
- restarted computer
- 7th drop: 5-8 fps on HIGH
- restarted client
- 8th drop: 5-8 fps on LOW
My system:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 @ 2.66GHz
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon 5770 2GB
I have my latest graphics drivers, and all windows updates.
Like I said, nothing has changed on my computer. I went from a completely playable FPS 11 patches ago, to consistently terrible performance.
What the heck is going on? Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround?

Yes it's a known issue.
The current work around is to buy a new PC
Seriously but, doing a complete fresh install has helped some people with fps issues, also try searching for the new way to edit your user.cfg

I hear something about shader file cache needed to be deleted as well. I'd assume a fresh install would handle that though.

Definately try the full re-install as suggested since I am running a very similar spec.
Windows 7 Ultimate.
Core2Quad Q8200 OC'd - 2.8Ghz.
4GB DDR2.
Power Color Radeon HD4850 1GB
On Medium Settings FPS is around 25-30FPS but drops to around 20, sometimes lower when right in the mix, when in battle. Definately playable although not ideal.

In case you haven´t done that yet: check your graphic drivers. Installing the latest version helped me in a similar case

You may have been away when MWO shifted to CryEngine 3.4 which killed a lot of optimization work.
