OK, so I've been killing my brain trying to search the forums for an answer to this, and I don't see one anywhere... so here's what I want to know:

Is there a way to set free look to be defaulted to "ON" the way you can set the arm lock, so that pressing the free look button will disable it?

Exactly the opposite of how it works now.

I know there's no check box, but I was wondering if maybe there is a command I can put in the user.cfg file or something.

I'd rather not discuss "why," just yet... I just need to know if it can be done or not.

Hopefully someone has an answer.... thanks!

You might be able to use a macro to accomplish that, but I don't know of a way to do it via user.cfg - seems like it should be possible, though.

Well, I just also discovered that all analog X/Y controls do the same thing all the time. Which means that when I've got "free look" on, my mouse and joystick BOTH move my point-of-view.

This won't work. I need to be able to control my torso/targeting reticles with the joystick and my free look POV with the mouse. ARGH.

This could be accomplished in the XML files in your game. However as of march 21 this is against the ToS.

If you file a support ticket they might eventually add an option.

If you have a 5 button mouse you could program one of those buttons to be your free lock button or use macros like DEMAX said.

That's more annoying than not to do. A simpler solution is this.
Armlock disable in options.
Then. When you want to line up the torso/arm shot, press Shift or armlock key.

When you want to control the arms independently, just use freelook.

When you want to look without giving away where you are looking, press both freelook and shift (armlock hold).

In most cases it is easier to press Armlock on to line up a shot yet keep the arms free to make all of those important shots than it is to always have it on and disable for a freelook-shot.

Fun-fact.
While freelooking with armlock on or off, you can press the armlock toggle/hold key (Shift by default) to 'jiggle' the joystick around. Sometimes it's fun to play with your stick on those long walks across Alpine.

Ah, and here's the rub:

I'm not looking to use free look to aim. I am perfectly happy toggling arm lock back and forth as suits my current situation (I leave it set to locked by default, then free it when I need to aim somewhere my torso won't point).

I want to use free look more like in a flight sim, where I'm looking around independently of how I'm controlling my machine. I am currently about 75% finished building my "Neurohelmet" inspired by the Oculus Rift. Once I've bought the LCD screen and mounted everything, I'll have a functional prototype.

Now, this helmet uses a Wiimote and GlovePIE for head tracking. It generates XY values for the mouse. So the idea would be to be able to move my head around while wearing my helmet, changing my free look POV as I do so, but still being able to move around the targeting reticle for targeting. I tested the tracking using the Wiimote earlier in-game and at the default sensitivity in MWO combined with my script in GlovePIE, I get damn near 1:1 head tracking (AWESOME)!

I did just fire off an email to the devs about this. I've seen a lot of griping about this game, but honestly so far I have to say its more than I hoped for (especially for free)! I'd just like to see this one little change made, and I'd be a happy, happy Mechwarrior.

That sounds truly awesome. I have heard that the devs got a prototype TrackIR system working. I think they have something called FreeTrack that is a free alternative, perhaps you could look into that.
